Semis Dominate U.S. Market Cap Share

Semiconductor stocks now account for about 14% of the overall U.S. equity market, a record-high share that exceeds their weight during the Dot Com era. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index has also outpaced the S&P 500 (SPX) relative to its Dot Com peak, underscoring how central the group has become to current U.S. equity leadership.
Historically, when a single sector reached an unprecedented slice of total market capitalization, that concentration sometimes preceded sharp drawdowns and long stretches of underperformance. Examples include U.S. technology at the 2000 peak, Japanese financials and real estate around 1989, and U.S. energy majors near the late-1970s and mid-2000s commodity booms. In those episodes, sector weights were clear outliers versus history and were eventually followed by significant relative giveback.
Today’s semiconductor concentration is heavily influenced by large constituents such as NVIDIA (NVDA), Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and ASML (ASML), which carry substantial weight in major indices. If the historically observed pattern were to repeat, a normalization in sector share would likely occur through weaker semiconductor performance relative to broader benchmarks rather than further gains in concentration. However, the historical relationship is conditional: an extreme market-cap share by itself does not ensure a bubble or a future correction, and fundamentals can differentiate outcomes across cycles.
Terminology
- Market-capitalization weighting: Index construction method where each constituent is weighted by its total market value.
- Drawdown: Peak-to-trough decline in the value of an asset or index.
