Micron Technology (MU) is reporting exceptionally strong results, with earnings, margins and EPS growth all running at very elevated levels while its trailing P/E screens low. At the same time, commentary across the semiconductor space has turned clearly optimistic on memory-focused names, reflecting confidence in the current DRAM and NAND upturn supported by AI and data-center demand.
Historically, this combination of peak fundamentals and “cheap on current earnings” optics has often occurred late in cyclical industries. In a prior memory cycle, Micron (MU) and peers such as Western Digital (WDC) and Seagate (STX) peaked around 2018 after record profitability, then underperformed for 12-18 months as the cycle turned. Similar dynamics were visible in oil producers and services stocks during the 2013-2014 boom and in miners during the 2006-2008 commodity surge.
Across these episodes, the pattern typically appeared when revenue, EPS and margins already sat near historical highs while valuations looked undemanding only on trailing numbers. In such environments, the market had already priced in the good news, leaving less room for multiple expansion if growth normalised. The current setup around Micron (MU) and other memory manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix fits many of these late-cycle conditions, although any future path for the group remains probabilistic rather than predetermined.
