BioNTech raises 2026 revenue outlook after strong Q3
BioNTech lifted the midpoint of its full-year 2026 revenue guidance and narrowed the expected range to €1.7–1.9 billion after reporting third quarter results that exceeded market expectations. The company said the updated outlook follows its revenue performance in the quarter, during which shares of the German biotechnology group rose 2.82% in pre-market trading.
The revised guidance keeps BioNTech’s projected 2026 sales toward the upper end of its previous range, with the company maintaining its forecasts for adjusted research and development costs and adjusted selling, general and administrative expenses. Management highlighted that the financial strength underpinning the updated outlook also supports continued investment in late-stage oncology programs and capital returns.
Third quarter 2026 financial performance
For the third quarter of 2026, BioNTech generated revenue of €1,289.2 million, above a consensus estimate of €1.05 billion. Net income for the period was €184.5 million, and earnings per share were €0.73. The company reported adjusted net profit of €440.9 million.
Quarterly revenue declined 15% year on year from €1.52 billion, mainly due to lower market demand for COVID-19 vaccines. Adjusted research and development expenses increased to €578.5 million from €479.4 million, driven by higher spending on late-stage immuno-oncology and antibody-drug conjugate programs. Adjusted SG&A expenses were €178.5 million, and full-year adjusted SG&A guidance remained unchanged at €700–800 million.
Over the first nine months of 2026, BioNTech posted a loss of €1.17 billion, despite the profitable third quarter. The company reported maintaining a strong financial position with cash, cash equivalents and security investments, supporting both pipeline development and shareholder returns.
Share repurchase program and capital returns
BioNTech is returning capital to shareholders through a share repurchase program of up to $1 billion in American Depositary Shares running until May 2027. Since the start of the program, the company has repurchased 5,037,452 ADSs at an average price of $91.98, for total consideration of $463.3 million, equivalent to €403.5 million.
The company emphasized that this capital return strategy is being pursued alongside efforts to enhance operational efficiency and cost discipline. Management described these steps, together with focused investment in prioritized late-stage oncology programs, as aimed at creating sustainable long-term value.
Oncology pipeline advances in lung and breast cancer
In parallel with the financial update, BioNTech reported progress across its oncology pipeline. Data presented for gotistobart showed the asset nearly doubled median overall survival versus chemotherapy in previously treated squamous non-small cell lung cancer. An early analysis of a lung cancer combination also showed preliminary median progression-free survival of 6.9 months and a confirmed objective response rate of 36.7%.
In breast cancer, BioNTech and DualityBio announced that trastuzumab pamirtecan met the primary endpoint in the Phase 3 DYNASTY-Breast02 trial in metastatic, hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer with low HER2 expression, delivering a statistically significant but moderate improvement in progression-free survival over physician’s choice of chemotherapy. BioNTech is also advancing a global Phase 3 trial evaluating its asset pumitamig in combination with sacituzumab govitecan in triple-negative breast cancer, with BioNTech sponsoring and leading the study while its partner supplies the drug.
