Italian car market posts 4.8% growth in October

New car registrations in Italy increased by 4.8% year-on-year in October 2026, reaching 131,921 vehicles, based on transport ministry data. The rise indicates continued expansion of the Italian car market compared with the same month a year earlier, even as growth momentum slowed relative to September. October’s performance contributes to a solid overall increase in volumes so far this year.

Over the January–October period, new car registrations in Italy rose by 8.3% compared with the same period of the previous year, bringing total volumes to about 1.4 million units. The cumulative figure was 1,401,002 units, underscoring the scale of the recovery in new vehicle demand across the first ten months of 2026.

Stellantis underperforms the wider market

Italian market leader Stellantis recorded a decline in October, with sales down 4.8% year-on-year. The group, which includes brands such as Fiat, Jeep, Peugeot and the Leapmotor partnership, saw its market share stand at 24.1% for the month. This contrasts with the overall rise in registrations and indicates that Stellantis lagged behind the broader market in October.

Stellantis indicated that it faced reduced availability of components in October. The company reported that a shortage of an electronic engine component disrupted production of some Fiat models in Italy. This supply issue had direct consequences for Fiat’s volumes and market share in the Italian market during the month, contributing to Stellantis’ weaker sales performance.

Tesla and broader market composition

Within the overall market expansion, Tesla (TSLA)’s registrations in Italy reached 497 units in October. This represented a 94.1% increase compared with the same month a year earlier and resulted in a market share of 0.38%. Tesla’s growth came against the backdrop of a market still dominated by established manufacturers but highlights the presence of newer entrants in the Italian passenger car segment.

Total new-car registrations in October were 131,921 units, and cumulative registrations for January–October were about 1.4 million units. Electrified powertrains accounted for 67.57% of October registrations, and battery electric vehicles reached 7,948 units in the month.

Key Takeaways

  • 01Italy’s car market is expanding, with October growth adding to an 8.3% rise in registrations over the first ten months of 2026.
  • 02Stellantis’ October decline and component shortages show that supply constraints can cause major brands to underperform even in a growing market.
  • 03Tesla (TSLA)’s sharp volume increase and the high share of electrified powertrains indicate a significant shift in Italy’s new-car mix toward alternative drivetrains.
