Macau GGR falls 10% in October

Unbranded casino gaming tables in a Macau-style resort highlighting October GGR decline and weaker revenue trends

Key Points

  • 01Macau October casino GGR declined 10% year-on-year to MOP21.68B
  • 02The drop extended Macau’s streak of annual GGR declines to five months
  • 03October revenue was about 20% higher than September’s level of MOP18.06 billion.
  • 04Ten‑month GGR reached MOP208.80 billion, below the full‑year target.

October revenue extends Macau’s GGR downturn

Macau’s casino gross gaming revenue fell 10% year-on-year in October 2026 to MOP21.68 billion (US$2.68 billion), extending a run of annual declines to five consecutive months.

Despite the annual decline, October GGR was about 20% higher than September’s level of MOP18.06 billion.

Golden Week strength contrasts with high-end softness

Tourism indicators during the early October Golden Week were robust. Macau welcomed around 1.14 million visitors between October 1 and 7, and hotel occupancy averaged 91.3% over the holiday period. Events such as the NBA China Games at The Venetian Macao also supported visitation and gaming activity.

Solid visitor volumes did not translate into comparable gaming spend by high-end players. Weak spending by high-end players and soft premium mass revenues were key drags on overall GGR. Truist Securities said the base mass segment has been the slowest to recover since the pandemic, indicating uneven demand across customer tiers.

Year-to-date performance and comparison with 2019

For the first ten months of 2026, Macau’s casino GGR reached MOP208.80 billion (US$25.84 billion).

Government data also show that industry-wide GGR in the third quarter of 2026 fell 3.7% year-on-year and 1.3% quarter-on-quarter to MOP60.4 billion (US$7.47 billion), mainly due to soft premium mass revenues. Preliminary figures indicate Macau’s GDP grew 0.1% year-on-year to US$13.1 billion in the same quarter, aligning with a picture of subdued but positive overall economic growth.

Outlook and full-year targets

Analysts have indicated that headwinds for Macau’s gaming operators are likely to persist, though not as severely as in the September 2026 quarter, and that there is “no clear near-term inflection point” for GGR or sector profitability. Some institutions noted that investors may have underestimated the weakness in underlying gaming demand, especially given the divergence between visitor numbers and revenue trends.

Macau could still achieve the government’s 2026 full-year GGR target of MOP236 billion. To reach that figure, Macau would need a sustained pick-up in monthly GGR during the fourth quarter. This requirement suggests the target remains attainable if conditions do not deteriorate further, despite the recent sequence of monthly year-on-year declines.

Key Takeaways

  • 01Macau’s October GGR shows that strong visitor recovery alone is not sufficient to restore revenue to pre-pandemic levels, as higher-value play and mass demand remain constrained.
  • 02The market is experiencing a short-term setback, with five straight months of annual GGR declines, even as year-to-date revenue is slightly above 2025 levels.
  • 03The current GGR trajectory still allows room to meet the government’s 2026 target, implying that recent weakness is meaningful but not yet decisive for the full-year outcome.
