Large funding round for European fusion startup

Proxima Fusion has raised €411 million in a new financing round announced on July 7, 2026, giving the German nuclear fusion startup a valuation of €2.4 billion. The company described this transaction as establishing it as the best‑funded fusion company in Europe. The funding comes roughly three years after Proxima’s founding and marks one of the largest capital injections into a private fusion venture in the region.

The round was led by XTX Ventures and East X Ventures. A broad group of investors joined, including strategic participation from Alphabet’s Google and German utility RWE (RWEd). Additional institutional and venture investors also took part, expanding Proxima’s backer base across technology, energy and financial sectors.

Strategic role of Google and RWE

Google’s participation adds a major global technology company to Proxima’s investor roster. The investment underscores ongoing interest from large tech firms in advanced energy technologies, including nuclear fusion. While financial details of individual investor commitments were not disclosed, Google is identified as a strategic backer in the round.

RWE (RWEd) joined as a strategic investor only months after entering into an agreement with Proxima to collaborate on a commercial stellarator fusion power plant. The planned plant is to be located at the site of a former nuclear fission facility in Gundremmingen, Bavaria. The new equity stake deepens RWE’s involvement in Proxima’s fusion roadmap and links the utility directly to plans for a future power station.

Financing Alpha, the stellarator demonstrator

Proceeds from the €411 million round will fund Alpha, Proxima’s planned net‑energy stellarator demonstrator near Munich. Alpha is intended to serve as a bridge between decades of fusion research and later commercial deployment. Proxima targets operation of this demonstrator in the early 2030s, positioning it as a key step toward a first commercial fusion power plant later that decade.

The Alpha project is being developed in partnership with the state of Bavaria, the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics and RWE. Within this collaboration, the demonstrator is expected to validate critical technologies for stellarator‑based fusion. Successful operation would support design and construction of the commercial plant envisaged for Gundremmingen.

Scaling HTS technology and company growth

Beyond Alpha, Proxima plans to use the new capital to expand production of high‑temperature superconducting (HTS) cables and magnets. These components are central to the stellarator design and are required at scale for both the demonstrator and any subsequent commercial plants. The company also aims to advance engineering and manufacturing systems tailored to stellarator construction.

Proxima stated that it will accelerate hiring across its three locations in Germany, Switzerland and the UK. The expanded workforce is intended to support hardware development, project delivery and industrialization of the company’s fusion technology. Management framed the round as evidence that Europe can build globally competitive companies around breakthrough scientific advances.

Key Takeaways

  • 01The €411 million round positions Proxima Fusion as a leading capitalized fusion startup in Europe, with a €2.4 billion valuation anchoring investor confidence.
  • 02Strategic investments from Google and RWE link the company’s fusion ambitions to both digital technology capabilities and established energy market expertise.
  • 03Funding earmarked for the Alpha demonstrator and HTS magnet scale‑up indicates a focus on moving from research toward industrial‑scale fusion hardware and deployment.
  • 04The RWE partnership around a future Gundremmingen plant, combined with accelerated hiring, signals a push to translate laboratory‑grade stellarator designs into commercial power infrastructure.
