Yuan trades close to multi‑year high

China’s yuan hovered near a more-than-four-year high against the US dollar on Monday, with the onshore spot rate at 6.6551 per dollar as of 0249 GMT. The level kept the currency close to the 6.6523 mark reached on Friday, a more-than-four-year high.

The performance of the yuan came as investors focused on political and policy events that could shape global and domestic markets in the near term. Market participants monitored broader foreign exchange conditions while positioning around the Chinese currency’s recent appreciation trend.

PBOC guidance and controlled appreciation

Before onshore trading began, the People’s Bank of China set the daily midpoint at 6.7146 per dollar. The central bank has been gradually strengthening its daily guidance this year but has kept fixings weaker than market expectations, indicating an effort to manage the pace of appreciation rather than allow rapid gains.

Analysts noted that the trend of yuan appreciation remains intact despite the broader global market backdrop. They highlighted that Chinese authorities are setting stronger daily fixings and are not pushing back against the strengthening path of the currency. With China scheduled to host the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting later in November, expectations have formed that the yuan’s appreciation will continue.

Domestic markets and policy expectations

Inside China, investors awaited possible official policy measures to support financial markets after Chinese blue-chip stocks recorded their worst monthly performance in more than a decade in October. The weak equity performance has sharpened attention on whether authorities will introduce steps aimed at stabilising sentiment and activity. Currency moves are being watched alongside any potential action affecting stock and credit markets.

Separately, the central bank injected cash into the banking system on Monday and formally shifted its main policy rate to an overnight lending rate. Analysts said this adjustment could ease funding conditions and provide support to economic activity. The liquidity operations and rate framework change form part of the broader toolkit being used to underpin the domestic economy while the currency remains strong.

US midterm elections and global market focus

In global markets, major currencies, including the dollar, traded in a holding pattern as investors looked ahead to this week’s US midterm elections. The vote could alter the balance of power in Congress and influence control over federal spending. Market participants assessed potential implications for global risk sentiment and capital flows, factors that can affect the dollar’s path and, by extension, the yuan’s trading environment.

With attention split between domestic policy expectations and external political events, the yuan’s position near a multi-year high has become a focal point for traders. The combination of controlled currency guidance, liquidity support measures, and anticipation of upcoming political and diplomatic milestones is shaping how investors approach Chinese assets and the broader regional market.

Key Takeaways

  • 01The yuan’s strength reflects both controlled policy guidance and firm market demand, keeping it near a multi-year high against the dollar.
  • 02PBOC actions show a dual focus on managing the currency’s appreciation while easing domestic funding conditions through liquidity injections and a new overnight policy rate.
  • 03Investor attention is divided between China-focused policy signals and US midterm election outcomes, linking yuan moves to both domestic and global drivers.
