Stock certificates and dividend documents on a desk illustrating 3M share buybacks and $0.78 dividend

Key Points

  • 013M board authorizes up to $6.0 billion in new share repurchases
  • 02Total buyback capacity rises to $7.5 billion including prior approval
  • 03New authorization has no set end date, defining a ceiling on repurchases
  • 04Board declares Q4 2026 dividend of $0.78 per share, payable December 11

3M expands share repurchase capacity

3M’s board of directors has approved a new authorization to repurchase up to $6.0 billion of the company’s outstanding common stock. This new authorization adds to the $1.5 billion that remained under the company’s existing 2025 repurchase authorization, bringing the total available capacity for share repurchases to $7.5 billion.

The new program does not have a pre-established closing date. It serves as a ceiling on how much stock the company is permitted to repurchase rather than a binding commitment to deploy the full amount within a specified timeframe.

The buyback authorization applies to 3M’s common stock listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker MMM. The company manufactures industrial and consumer products across multiple technology platforms.

Dividend declaration alongside buyback authorization

In conjunction with the repurchase authorization, the board declared a quarterly dividend of $0.78 per share for the fourth quarter of 2026. The dividend will be payable on December 11, 2026, to shareholders of record at the close of business on November 13, 2026.

The announced dividend maintains the same quarterly rate that 3M declared and paid in each of the first three quarters of 2026. The company has paid dividends to shareholders without interruption for more than 100 years, underscoring the continued role of dividends in its capital allocation approach.

Recent cash flows and prior repurchases provide context

3M used $3.225 billion to purchase treasury stock in the first nine months of 2026, compared with $2.699 billion in the same period of 2025. Within that total, third-quarter 2026 treasury stock purchases were $229 million, compared with $473 million in the third quarter of 2025.

Operating cash flow for the first nine months of 2026 was $2.046 billion, up from $723 million in the corresponding period in 2025. During the same 2026 period, 3M paid $1.216 billion in dividends.

The company also allocated $704 million to purchases of property, plant and equipment and $1.910 billion to acquisitions, net of cash acquired, in the first nine months of 2026. Cash and cash equivalents stood at $4.835 billion as of September 30, 2026, after a net decrease of $400 million over the nine-month period.

Against this backdrop, the new $6.0 billion repurchase authorization and continued $0.78 quarterly dividend outline the company’s current capacity and intent to return capital to shareholders, while still funding capital investment and acquisitions within its overall cash allocation.

Key Takeaways

  • 013M now has $7.5 billion of authorized share repurchase capacity, providing substantial room for future stock buybacks without committing to a fixed schedule.
  • 02The board’s decision to pair a large new buyback authorization with a maintained $0.78 quarterly dividend underscores a continued emphasis on shareholder returns.
  • 03Recent increases in operating cash flow and substantial 2026 repurchases and investments frame the new authorization within a broader cash allocation strategy.
