Caterpillar finalizes Fabick Cat dealership acquisition

Caterpillar Inc. has completed the acquisition of John Fabick Tractor Company, also known as Fabick Cat, a longtime Cat dealer with more than 100 years of operating history and customer relationships. The transaction follows an agreement Caterpillar entered into in September 2026, which required regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions before closing on November 2, 2026.

Fabick serves customers across portions of Missouri and Illinois, the entire state of Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The dealership operates 37 locations across this territory, providing a broad regional footprint for Caterpillar’s construction, mining and power solutions.

Strategic footprint and service offering

Through the acquisition, Caterpillar now owns a dealer that supplies construction and mining equipment, off-highway engines, aerial lifts and power generation equipment to its regional customer base. Fabick’s operations also include equipment rentals and emergency-power services, supported by a network of Fabick Cat, Fabick Rents and Fabick Power Systems sites.

Fabick’s website describes a wide range of services such as field service, shop service, customer value agreements and technology solutions. It also highlights a Cat Certified Used program in which qualifying machines are inspected, can be eligible for flexible financing and are backed by a Caterpillar warranty.

Leadership transition and customer focus

With the acquisition completed, Caterpillar Senior Vice President Steve Ferguson has been appointed CEO and Dealer Principal of Fabick. Ferguson joined Caterpillar in 1990 and most recently served as senior vice president of the Industrial Power Systems Division, with previous roles spanning mining, power and energy, finance and operations.

Caterpillar has characterized the transaction as a customer-focused decision intended to support a seamless transition in Fabick’s ownership. The company has indicated that Fabick’s existing operations and customer service structure will be maintained, emphasizing continued local support and the level of service that customers have come to expect from the dealer.

Context within Caterpillar’s broader business

The acquisition of Fabick adds to Caterpillar’s direct role in the dealer network across key Midwestern markets. Fabick’s more than century-long customer relationships align with Caterpillar’s stated focus on sustaining strong service and support in its equipment and power systems businesses.

For 2025, Caterpillar reported $67.6 billion in sales and revenues, underscoring the scale at which the company operates as it integrates Fabick into its organization. The Fabick transaction is framed as a way to ensure continuity for customers while bringing the dealer fully under Caterpillar’s ownership and leadership structure.

Key Takeaways

  • 01Caterpillar (CAT) now directly owns a major Midwestern Cat dealer with a century-long presence, expanding its controlled footprint in key U.S. territories.
  • 02Maintaining Fabick’s existing operations and service model signals an emphasis on continuity for customers during the ownership transition.
  • 03Appointing experienced executive Steve Ferguson as CEO and Dealer Principal positions Fabick within Caterpillar’s broader leadership and organizational framework.
