SoftBank is committing significant capital to energy infrastructure for AI data centers, including a $1 billion investment in SB Energy to expand renewable generation and grid-scale battery storage for upcoming AI campuses. Public statements also outline broader power-related AI data center plans that emphasize generation, transmission, and grid-scale storage as critical enablers for always-on AI workloads.

Historically, similar megatrends have driven substantial repricing in enabling hardware. During the dot-com era, optical networking and router suppliers such as Cisco (CSCO), JDS Uniphase (JDSU), and Nortel (NT) saw multi-year gains as internet traffic strained bandwidth. In the cloud computing cycle, data center REITs like Digital Realty (DLR) and Equinix (EQIX) rallied as hyperscale demand required more power and space.

A comparable pattern appeared in the smartphone buildout, when wireless infrastructure owners including American Tower (AMT) and Crown Castle (CCI) appreciated as 3G and 4G deployments required denser tower networks. These episodes illustrate how clear bottlenecks in bandwidth or physical infrastructure, once targeted by large strategic spending, have often been followed by strong performance in the related asset base.

If AI power and storage emerge as the next major constraint, companies positioned in onsite generation and storage could be exposed to incremental demand. Bloom Energy (BE) offers solid-oxide fuel cell systems for always-on onsite power, FuelCell Energy (FCEL) develops distributed fuel cell power plants, Eos Energy Enterprises (EOSE) targets long-duration zinc-based battery systems, and Fluence Energy (FLNC) provides grid-scale battery storage integration. However, improved demand and equity performance for these names are not assured and will depend on execution, policy support, financing conditions, and competitive dynamics across the storage and onsite power landscape.
