Alts Push Deeper Into 401(k) Lineups

Allocations to alternative assets inside retirement vehicles such as 401(k) plans are increasing, extending a shift that started in institutional portfolios. Plan sponsors are adding exposure to private equity, private credit, hedge funds and real estate funds through target‑date structures, collective trusts and other DC‑friendly wrappers.
This migration mirrors prior cycles in which niche asset classes became embedded in mainstream retirement menus, such as REITs in the 1990s-2000s and liquid alternatives in the post‑2008 period. In each case, rising marketing intensity and compelling narratives around diversification or yield helped drive penetration.
As more 401(k) savings are directed toward alternative assets, the mix between public equities and bond funds in retirement accounts is gradually changing. That shift alters portfolio risk and liquidity characteristics, and typically comes with higher embedded fee structures compared with traditional index‑based options.
Large listed alternative managers stand directly exposed to this trend. Blackstone (BX), KKR & Co. (KKR), The Carlyle Group (CG) and Ares Management (ARES) are all positioned to capture incremental fee‑earning assets as private equity and private credit sleeves gain traction inside defined contribution and retail retirement channels.
Terminology
- Target-date structures: Multi-asset funds that automatically shift from risky to conservative as retirement approaches.
- Defined contribution: Retirement plans where contributions are fixed but final benefits depend on investment performance.
