IBM and Honeywell lead Dow intraday advance

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was trading 164 points higher in intraday action, a gain of about 0.3%. The move kept the blue-chip index in positive territory as several large constituents posted notable price advances.

Automated market data from Dow Jones and FactSet showed a broad-based lift within the 30-stock benchmark, with particular strength in technology and industrial components during the session.

IBM was the single largest contributor to the Dow’s rise, with its shares surging $19.64, an increase of 8.7%. Honeywell (HON) also advanced sharply, gaining $6.72, or 3.1%, during intraday trading.

Together, IBM and Honeywell were estimated to have provided about a 162-point boost to the Dow, accounting for roughly one third of the index’s intraday rally. Their outsized impact reflected both the scale of their price moves and the mechanics of the price-weighted index.

Other Dow components cited as notable contributors to the advance included Cisco (CSCO), Merck and Amgen (AMGN). Gains in these stocks added to the upward momentum generated by IBM and Honeywell.

The combined performance of these technology, healthcare and industrial names helped offset weaker moves elsewhere in the index, allowing the Dow to hold a solid positive reading during the session.

The Dow’s price-weighted construction amplifies the effect of large price changes in individual components. A $1 move in any of the 30 stocks produces an approximately 6.16-point swing in the index level.

Because of this structure, IBM’s nearly $20 gain and Honeywell’s increase of more than $6 translated into significant index-level movements, underscoring how a handful of higher-priced constituents can heavily influence intraday direction.
