Modi urges belt-tightening amid Gulf crisis

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on Indians to sharply reduce their use of petrol, diesel and gas in response to the escalating crisis in West Asia. He linked lower consumption of imported petroleum products to saving foreign exchange and limiting the economic fallout of the conflict on India.

Modi framed the appeal as a national effort to manage risks from surging global energy prices. He said that lowering fuel demand at the household and community level could help cushion the impact of higher import costs on the broader economy.

A central element of Modi’s message was the need to protect India’s foreign exchange reserves. He urged citizens to avoid non-essential foreign travel and to postpone buying gold for at least a year, saying these steps would ease pressure on external accounts at a time of heightened geopolitical tension in West Asia.

The Prime Minister tied individual choices on consumption, travel and investment to the national balance of payments. By cutting back on activities that require significant foreign currency outflows, he argued that households could directly support macroeconomic stability.

Modi underscored India’s vulnerability to external shocks by noting that the country imports nearly 90% of its crude oil requirements. This high reliance on overseas supplies makes the domestic economy sensitive to disruptions and price spikes linked to conflicts in key producing regions such as West Asia.

He said that reducing dependence on imported petro products is essential both to conserve foreign exchange and to limit the transmission of global energy volatility into domestic inflation and growth.

As part of a broader conservation push, Modi encouraged greater use of public transport to cut fuel use. He also suggested reviving or expanding work-from-home arrangements where feasible, presenting remote work as a way to reduce daily commuting and associated energy consumption.

Beyond transport fuels, the Prime Minister urged families to halve their cooking oil consumption. He presented this as serving a dual purpose: lowering demand for imported products and providing potential health benefits from reduced oil intake.

The call for restraint covers several aspects of household behaviour, from everyday fuel use and commuting patterns to discretionary spending on foreign trips and gold. Modi positioned these measures as voluntary but important contributions to national economic resilience during a period of global uncertainty.

Taken together, the requested changes reflect the government’s concern over the intersection of geopolitical risk, high energy prices and India’s external balances. The emphasis on individual action suggests a focus on demand-side responses alongside any policy measures aimed at managing the impact of the West Asia crisis.
