NBA Europe plans draw strong investor demand

The NBA is working on the creation of a new European league, NBA Europe, with a targeted launch in October 2027. The initial format under discussion is a 16-team competition that would sit within the NBA’s broader global strategy for basketball.

Plans for the league extend beyond the starting structure. The vision presented to stakeholders includes expanding from 16 to 18 teams and eventually to 24 teams by the seventh year of operation, signalling an intention to build a sizable pan-European competition over time.

Investor interest in NBA Europe has been described as significant. More than 120 prospective investors have submitted formal declarations of interest in acquiring a place in the planned league, indicating broad demand for participation across the proposed structure.

Bids reported by interested parties span a wide range, from about $500 million to more than $1 billion. These levels suggest that potential investors are valuing participation in NBA Europe at substantial franchise-style price points, even as commercial terms continue to be negotiated.

A proposed financial framework has been a central part of the discussions between the NBA and potential European stakeholders. One element under consideration is a revenue split that has been described as 52 per cent for the NBA and 48 per cent for NBA Europe teams.

However, the NBA has stated that this split is not final. League officials have indicated that, for several years after launch, any revenues generated by NBA Europe are intended to be reinvested back into the European initiative rather than distributed as profit, with the aim of supporting the league’s early growth and stability.

Alongside financial terms, governance and integration with existing European basketball structures remain active points of discussion. The NBA is engaging with European basketball entities to address how revenue-sharing, competition formats and oversight would work in practice.

These talks cover the balance between the NBA’s central role in developing the new league and the participation of European stakeholders, as the parties work to align commercial, competitive and regulatory interests ahead of the proposed 2027 start date.

Taken together, the launch timetable, expansion roadmap and investor response outline a potential path for NBA Europe from a 16-team start-up to a larger, multi-market platform. The seven-year expansion plan to as many as 24 teams is positioned as a core part of this strategy.

While many details, particularly around revenue allocation and governance, remain under negotiation, the combination of strong initial investor interest and a defined expansion trajectory frames NBA Europe as a major planned development in professional basketball’s European landscape.
