Nvidia, Microsoft unveil RTX Spark for AI PCs

June 1, 2026 at 07:33 UTC

Close-up of advanced PC graphics chip on motherboard for new AI PC RTX Spark platform NVDA MSFT

Key Points

  • Nvidia (NVDA) and Microsoft (MSFT) introduced RTX Spark, a new AI-focused superchip for Windows PCs
  • RTX Spark systems are slated to launch this fall across major OEM laptop and desktop lines
  • The platform adds new Windows security primitives and Nvidia (NVDA) OpenShell for local AI agents
  • Creative and technical apps are being optimized to exploit RTX Spark GPU acceleration

Nvidia and Microsoft launch RTX Spark for Windows

Nvidia (NVDA) and Microsoft (MSFT) jointly announced RTX Spark, a new Arm-based "superchip" designed to power next-generation Windows PCs with local, GPU-accelerated AI capabilities. The chip consolidates multiple Nvidia technologies, including CUDA, RTX, DLSS, FP4, TensorRT, OptiX, Reflex and G-SYNC, and is aimed at running local and frontier AI agents as well as creative, gaming and developer workloads.

The initiative is positioned at the center of Microsoft’s (MSFT) Windows AI PC strategy, with RTX Spark intended to handle personal agents and advanced content creation directly on the device rather than relying solely on cloud processing.

Hardware capabilities and performance features

Microsoft said RTX Spark systems will support up to 128 GB of unified memory, a configuration aimed at demanding local agentic workloads. Nvidia described the new chip as "roughly equivalent" to its leading RTX 5070 laptop GPU for now, giving an indication of expected performance for early systems.

To improve efficiency on thin-and-light devices, Microsoft and Nvidia enabled the Microsoft Power and Thermal Framework (MPTF) on RTX Spark platforms. According to the companies, MPTF is intended to maximize performance-per-watt and manage thermals in compact designs, including laptops as thin as 14 millimeters.

Security model and OpenShell runtime for agents

Alongside the hardware, Nvidia and Microsoft are introducing new Windows security primitives and the Nvidia OpenShell runtime. These components are designed to support secure, on-device personal agents and manage how those agents operate and access data.

The companies said OpenShell will allow users to set policies for agent behavior and to control routing between local models running on RTX Spark and cloud-based services. The goal is to contain and manage on-device agents while giving users more granular policy control.

OEM rollout and system roadmap

RTX Spark-powered Windows laptops and compact desktop PCs are scheduled to become available this fall. Initial OEM partners include Microsoft Surface, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and MSI, with Acer and GIGABYTE models expected to follow later.

CNBC reported that Nvidia plans to ship more than 30 laptop models and 10 desktop models with RTX Spark over time. The first laptops are expected to be as thin as 14 millimeters and positioned at a premium price point in the Windows PC market.

Software ecosystem and application support

Microsoft and Nvidia said that Windows ML and TensorRT optimizations will expose RTX Spark GPU acceleration to local AI workloads. This integration is meant to make it easier for software to tap into the chip’s capabilities without extensive custom work from developers.

A range of creative and technical applications is either already native to the platform or being optimized for RTX Spark. The companies cited Blender, Adobe (ADBE) flagship applications and MATLAB among the software expected to benefit from accelerated local AI processing on upcoming systems.

Key Takeaways

  • RTX Spark marks a coordinated Nvidia-Microsoft effort to center Windows PCs around local AI processing rather than relying only on cloud resources.
  • High unified memory support and integration with MPTF suggest RTX Spark systems are designed for intensive AI workloads in thin-and-light form factors.
  • New security primitives and Nvidia OpenShell indicate that managing and governing personal AI agents is a core part of the platform design.
  • Broad OEM and software support positions RTX Spark as a key element in the emerging Windows AI PC ecosystem across premium laptops and desktops.
