Roomba Pioneer Unveils AI Pet Robot Familiar

Colin Angle, co-founder of iRobot and a leading figure behind the Roomba vacuum, has launched a new venture focused on emotionally engaging household robots. His startup, Familiar Machines & Magic, is targeting the expanding market for AI-driven home companions by developing a new product called Familiar.

The company’s strategy centers on creating robots that build relationships with users rather than just performing practical chores. This marks a shift in emphasis from Angle’s earlier work in home cleaning devices toward systems designed around interaction and companionship in everyday living spaces.

On May 4, 2026, Angle unveiled a four-legged prototype of an AI-powered pet robot named Familiar. The prototype was presented as the first public demonstration of the new platform from Familiar Machines & Magic, signaling the company’s entry into the consumer robotics arena.

Familiar is designed to move around the home on four legs, giving it a pet-like presence. It is intended to follow its owner through different rooms and respond to gestures, positioning it as an active participant in the household rather than a stationary device.

The Familiar robot is built to adapt to the daily habits of the people it lives with, learning patterns and behaviors over time. Familiar Machines & Magic aims for the device to function as a companion that integrates into users’ routines and environments.

Angle has stated that the Familiar will not speak in human language. Instead, it will vocalize and learn from its interactions, with the goal of creating a different style of communication that supports emotional engagement. This approach is intended to distinguish Familiar from voice-assistant devices that rely on conversational speech.

By emphasizing gesture response, movement, and non-verbal sounds, the robot is designed to behave more like an animal-like companion than a talking appliance. The concept aims to tap into demand for interactive and emotionally intelligent household robots.

Familiar Machines & Magic plans to begin testing the Familiar robot in consumers’ homes in early 2027. These trials are expected to provide real-world data on how the robot interacts with households and adapts to varied living environments.

Based on the planned development schedule, the startup is targeting a potential market launch in 2028. The proposed timeline positions Familiar as an upcoming entrant in the broader household robotics market, building on Angle’s track record in consumer home devices.
