Spirit Airlines halts flights after aid failure

Spirit Airlines has canceled all flights and ceased operations as of May 2, 2026, ending its 34-year run as a US budget carrier. The decision followed prolonged financial strain that led to two bankruptcy filings within a year, according to company statements.

The airline’s final flight departed from Detroit to Dallas-Fort Worth shortly after midnight on May 2, 2026. With that flight completed, the airline halted all remaining services and began formally winding down operations.
