Ukrainian drones hit Russian oil facilities

Overnight on May 29–30, Ukrainian drones targeted several pieces of Russian oil infrastructure across the south and interior of the country. The attacks triggered fires, emergency responses and conflicting claims over the extent of the damage.

The strikes formed part of what international and regional media described as an ongoing Ukrainian campaign against Russian energy facilities. Local officials in multiple regions reported incidents almost simultaneously, pointing to a coordinated series of attacks.

In Rostov Oblast, drones struck the port of Taganrog, setting a tanker and fuel storage facilities on fire. Regional authorities said the resulting blazes were later extinguished and reported that no oil spill had occurred.

Officials in the region stated that two people were injured in the Taganrog incident. Emergency services were deployed to contain the fires and assess damage to port infrastructure.

In Krasnodar Krai, Ukrainian drones hit an oil depot in the city of Armavir. Local authorities reported that a fire broke out at the facility but was brought under control after emergency response efforts.

Officials in Krasnodar Krai said there were no injuries from the Armavir strike. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy publicly confirmed that Ukrainian forces had carried out the attack on the depot.

On May 29, Ukrainian forces reportedly struck the Volgograd oil refinery, one of the key refining installations in the region. Ukrainian military statements and local reporting indicated that the plant subsequently halted production.

According to these reports, primary refining units identified as AVT-1, AVT-3, AVT-5 and AVT-6 sustained damage in the Volgograd strike. Volgograd Oblast authorities said at least one 90-year-old civilian was killed and two other people were injured in the wider region.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said that air defence forces shot down large numbers of incoming unmanned aerial vehicles during the overnight attacks. According to the ministry, 127 drones were destroyed across the affected areas.

Local and federal authorities framed the response as a combination of air defence operations and ground-level emergency containment. Fire services worked to limit damage and prevent environmental incidents, including potential oil spills.

The strikes targeted different parts of Russia’s oil infrastructure, including a seaport tanker and storage assets at Taganrog, an oil depot at Armavir and critical refining units at Volgograd. Together, they affected both processing and logistics nodes.

While local officials in Taganrog and Armavir reported that fires were extinguished or under control and highlighted the absence of reported spills at the port, the shutdown of the Volgograd refinery pointed to a disruption in fuel processing capacity.
