This buildout directly lifts U.S. non‑residential fixed investment, as servers, GPUs, construction, power systems and networking equipment are recorded in GDP. Suppliers across the data center food chain, including semiconductors, hardware, power and utilities, are capturing spillover demand, amplifying the growth impulse beyond the hyperscalers themselves.
Historically, similar technology and telecom investment waves have coincided with above‑trend U.S. GDP growth, such as the late‑1990s internet infrastructure boom and the mid‑2000s IT and software surge. In those episodes, multi‑year capex contributed a meaningful share of annual real GDP gains while the spending cycle remained intact.
The current AI‑driven expansion meets several of the same conditions: scale relative to GDP, focus on long‑lived domestic assets, and linkage to a broader innovation wave that encourages complementary private investment. While past capex booms have sometimes ended in overcapacity and later drag, the immediate effect of this data center cycle is a visible boost to measured U.S. growth.
