Debt markets are currently tightening for most AI companies, with issuance and new financing slowing sharply. This has started to reduce the rate of growth across AI-related businesses even as absolute activity remains elevated.

Equity markets are reacting to this deceleration in growth rather than to current headline fundamentals. AI stocks and other highly leveraged, growth-dependent equities are beginning to weaken as investors price in slower future expansion and potential cuts to capex plans.

Historically, phases where funding for a high-growth theme deteriorates after a period of exuberant issuance have often preceded extended drawdowns in richly valued segments. That pattern has previously appeared around the dot-com and telecom bust in 2000-2002, the 2007-2009 credit crisis, and the 2018 Q4 growth scare.

Within the current AI complex, names whose valuations are most anchored to long-duration growth in AI infrastructure spending look especially sensitive. Large hardware and infrastructure providers such as NVIDIA (NVDA), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Broadcom (AVGO), and Super Micro Computer (SMCI) remain profitable, but their multiples reflect aggressive assumptions about sustained AI capex that credit markets are now questioning.

If debt markets stay selective and the growth rate of AI spending continues to cool, history suggests extended multiple compression is possible even without an outright collapse in revenues. Broader indices tied to these themes, particularly those overweight high-growth tech and AI, would remain exposed to further repricing as investors reassess long-term return expectations.
