Amazon boosts minimum pay for U.S. operations staff

Amazon (AMZN) announced a higher minimum starting wage for U.S. full-time core operations employees, setting the new floor at $20 per hour. The move represents a $1 per hour raise for eligible workers in these roles. With this adjustment, the company said average hourly pay across its core operations workforce now stands at nearly $24 per hour.

The pay increase is part of Amazon’s (AMZN) annual review of compensation and benefits for its core operations staff. The company said it is committing more than $1.5 billion to fund the higher wages for these employees. Amazon also highlighted that it operates an annual step plan that raises pay during each of an employee’s first three years with the company.

When the value of benefits is included, Amazon stated that average total compensation for core operations employees exceeds $32 per hour. This figure reflects the combined impact of wages and the broader benefits package these workers receive.

New Day 1 Financial lifetime banking benefit

Alongside the wage increase, Amazon introduced a new lifetime banking benefit called Day 1 Financial. The program will be provided through First Tech Federal Credit Union. Access to Day 1 Financial is scheduled to begin rolling out in late 2026, with broader availability expected in 2027.

The Day 1 Financial benefit is designed to remain available to participating employees over the long term. By partnering with a credit union, Amazon is adding a financial services component to the suite of benefits attached to its core operations roles.

Expanded grocery discounts for U.S. employees

Amazon also announced new grocery discounts for U.S. employees, covering purchases on its retail platforms and at Whole Foods Market. Workers will receive an uncapped 10% discount on eligible groceries and everyday essentials ordered on Amazon.com and online at Whole Foods Market, subject to exclusions set by the company.

In addition, employees will be eligible for an uncapped 20% discount on in-store purchases at Whole Foods Market, again with certain exclusions. These discounts extend the overall value of compensation for core operations employees, complementing the pay increase and other benefits.

Key Takeaways

  • 01Amazon’s new $20 per hour minimum and annual step plan together establish a clearer wage trajectory for U.S. core operations workers.
  • 02The company’s commitment of more than $1.5 billion underscores that the compensation change is a sizable investment in its operations workforce.
  • 03By stating average total compensation above $32 per hour, Amazon is emphasizing the role of benefits and discounts in its employment proposition.
  • 04The Day 1 Financial program and expanded grocery discounts broaden compensation beyond cash pay, adding long-term financial and everyday spending advantages for employees.
