Key Points

  • 01Barclays (BARC.L) plans to cut about 5,000 jobs, around 5% of its workforce
  • 02About 1,000 roles have already gone, with roughly 4,000 more to follow
  • 03Most reductions target operational and support functions, including developers
  • 04The move coincides with £2.3bn Q3 profit and a £500m share buyback

Barclays outlines AI-linked workforce reduction

Barclays (BARC.L) has set out plans to cut around 5,000 jobs this year, representing about 5% of its global workforce. The bank said the reductions stem from “organisational simplification and technology change efficiency driven by AI” as it seeks to structurally lower its cost base. Executives described the programme as aimed at generating capacity for further investment while reshaping how the bank operates.

The lender has already removed about 1,000 roles and expects roughly 4,000 additional cuts to be completed by the end of 2026. The job reductions are being rolled out over the course of the year, with the bank linking the pace and scope of the changes directly to the introduction and scaling of artificial intelligence in its processes.

Focus on support and operational roles

The bulk of the planned 5,000 job cuts are concentrated in operational and support or functional roles. Around 60% of the reductions are expected to affect support positions, reflecting where Barclays (BARC.L) sees the greatest scope for efficiency gains from new technology. Developers are among the specific groups cited as being impacted by the restructuring.

Barclays has presented the changes as part of a broader effort to simplify its organisational structure. The integration of AI into more activities is intended to streamline internal processes and reduce the need for certain back-office and functional tasks, while maintaining the bank’s ability to invest in priority areas.

Financial results and capital return

The workforce announcement accompanied Barclays’ third-quarter results, in which the bank reported pre-tax profit of £2.3 billion. At the same time, the group unveiled a new £500 million share buyback, signalling an ongoing commitment to returning capital to shareholders.

By coupling cost-cutting measures with the deployment of AI and a significant buyback, Barclays is seeking to align its expense base with its technology strategy while continuing to distribute surplus capital. The bank’s management has framed the restructuring as a structural adjustment rather than a short-term response, with the goal of supporting future investment and profitability.

Key Takeaways

  • 01Barclays is using AI-driven process changes to justify a sizeable reduction in headcount while aiming to free resources for future investment.
  • 02The majority of job cuts fall on support and operational roles, highlighting where the bank expects the most technology-enabled efficiency gains.
  • 03Announcing the restructuring alongside strong quarterly profit and a £500m buyback shows the bank is pairing cost discipline with ongoing capital returns.
