Industrial circuit board in robotics lab reflects QNX growth in autos, robotics and AI for BB and NVDA

Key Points

  • 01BlackBerry (BB) stock rose after the CEO outlined strong QNX momentum and new markets.
  • 02QNX’s Alloy Kore platform has expanded beyond autos into robotics and physical AI.
  • 03The QNX business grew 20% in Q2 and holds a $1.2 billion royalty backlog.
  • 04Nvidia (NVDA) has standardized on QNX for its Halos Safety Stack, widening QNX’s reach.

BB stock advances as QNX expansion gains attention

BlackBerry (BB) shares edged 0.5% higher overnight on Monday after gaining 3% in the regular session as investors responded to comments from CEO John Giamatteo about the company’s QNX business and broader technology footprint. The stock is up 142% this year and has gained 91% over the past twelve months, putting it on track for its best annual performance since 2007. The move comes as BlackBerry positions itself less as a smartphone legacy name and more as a software provider embedded in connected vehicles, robots and other intelligent machines.

Retail sentiment toward the stock has been described as neutral, even as the share price has climbed. The overnight uptick followed renewed visibility into QNX’s growth profile, its expanding royalty pipeline and the role of new products such as the Alloy Kore platform in widening BlackBerry’s addressable market.

QNX Alloy Kore broadens BlackBerry’s addressable market

Giamatteo emphasized that BlackBerry is expanding beyond automotive software into robotics and physical AI, with QNX at the center of this shift. Alloy Kore, described as QNX’s new automotive operating system, brings together the core QNX operating system and middleware, significantly expanding the company’s addressable market. The platform has moved beyond traditional automotive applications and is designed to support connected and autonomous machines across sectors.

Alloy Kore’s commercial traction is already visible: its first design win is expected to bring in more than $100 million in future royalties, which would be the largest single design win in QNX’s history. Giamatteo cited three main drivers for QNX growth: the auto industry’s transition to high‑performance compute architectures, the expansion of software offerings through Alloy Kore, and emerging demand for physical AI applications.

QNX has become a key contributor to BlackBerry’s financial performance. The QNX business grew 20% in the second quarter and delivered gross margins of 87%, with management pointing to improving cash generation as evidence of a strengthening financial foundation. The QNX royalty backlog recently surpassed $1.2 billion, having increased by more than $250 million over two quarters, underscoring the long-term revenue visibility tied to existing design wins.

From smartphones to pervasive embedded software

Giamatteo described BlackBerry as a company whose products are now embedded in the environment rather than held in consumers’ hands. He said BlackBerry technology is present in 275 million cars as well as robots, government systems, medical instrumentation and supply chains. This installed base reflects how QNX has evolved from an automotive-focused platform into one that underpins a broad range of connected and autonomous machines.

Within this portfolio, robotics has emerged as one of the fastest-growing businesses for QNX. BlackBerry sees physical AI, where robots and machines interact with the real world, as an area where its safety‑oriented software can help ensure reliable operation. The company aims to leverage its experience from the automotive industry to support automated mobile robots, autonomous material‑handling equipment and other industrial systems.

Nvidia partnership accelerates QNX adoption in physical AI

A central part of the growth story is BlackBerry’s collaboration with Nvidia (NVDA). The relationship began in the automotive sector, but Nvidia has now standardized on QNX as the platform of choice for its Halos Safety Stack. Giamatteo said this decision has opened an extensive pipeline of opportunities for QNX-powered systems.

The Nvidia tie-up is feeding into applications such as automated mobile robots, autonomous forklifts and motorized platforms that move pallets to docking stations. These use cases illustrate how QNX is extending deeper into industrial and logistics environments that rely on physical AI. Giamatteo pointed to Nvidia’s adoption of QNX for robotics as a potential growth driver, reinforcing the view that QNX’s reach now spans far beyond its origins in in‑car systems.

Key Takeaways

  • 01BlackBerry (BB)’s recent share price strength is closely linked to the momentum and visibility in its QNX software business.
  • 02The Alloy Kore platform is central to expanding QNX beyond core automotive use into broader connected machine and physical AI markets.
  • 03High QNX margins, a growing royalty backlog and Nvidia (NVDA)’s standardization on QNX together signal a deepening and diversified pipeline of future revenue.
