Oil refinery complex under cloudy sky illustrating BP debt and Q3 impairment news

Key Points

  • 01BP (BP.L) projects end-Q3 2026 net debt at $13.5–14.5 billion
  • 02Stronger gas trading and refining margins underpin the balance sheet
  • 03BP (BP.L) expects $3.0–4.5 billion of post-tax Q3 impairment charges
  • 04A strategy and outlook update is set for 15 December 2026

BP forecasts sharp drop in net debt

BP (BP.L) expects its net debt at the end of the third quarter of 2026 to be between $13.5 billion and $14.5 billion. This compares with net debt of $22.3 billion at the end of the second quarter, indicating a substantial improvement in the company’s balance sheet over a three-month period.

The company links the anticipated reduction in net debt to strong cash generation during the quarter. This reflects improved performance in key businesses, particularly gas marketing and trading and refining, against a backdrop of elevated refining margins.

Trading and refining boost earnings

BP said its gas marketing and trading result in the third quarter is expected to be significantly higher than in the second quarter. This stronger trading performance is a major contributor to the cash flow used to reduce net debt.

Realised refining margins are also expected to deliver a notable benefit. BP estimates a positive impact of between $1.9 billion and $2.1 billion from higher refining margins in the third quarter, supported by its refining indicator margin rising to an average of $46.70 a barrel from $29.60 a barrel in the second quarter.

These trends in trading and refining underline how market conditions in the quarter have translated into stronger operational earnings. That strength has given BP more capacity to progress its financial targets and reduce leverage.

Significant Q3 impairment charges

Alongside the improvement in net debt, BP expects to recognise post-tax impairment charges of between $3.0 billion and $4.5 billion in the third quarter. These charges are primarily associated with transition businesses within its gas and low-carbon energy segment.

The impairments will affect reported earnings for the period, even as underlying cash generation improves. They highlight ongoing reassessment of asset values within parts of the portfolio linked to the energy transition.

Upcoming strategy and outlook update

BP plans to host a strategy and outlook update on 15 December 2026 in New York City. The event is scheduled after the company has met its current net debt target range, which it had set for the end of 2027.

The combination of lower net debt, strong trading and refining performance, and sizable impairments in transition businesses sets the backdrop for that December update. Investors will receive further detail on how BP intends to position its portfolio and balance sheet following this period of windfall earnings and portfolio reassessment.

Key Takeaways

  • 01BP’s balance sheet is set to strengthen markedly in Q3 2026, with net debt projected well below its earlier level.
  • 02Improved gas marketing, trading, and refining margins are central to the company’s ability to cut debt.
  • 03Sizeable impairments in gas and low-carbon transition businesses will weigh on reported profit even as cash flow improves.
