BSP weighs slower hikes amid easing inflation

Central bank meeting room symbolizing BSP policy decision on interest rate hikes and inflation

Key Points

  • 01BSP governor says weaker growth allows less aggressive tightening
  • 02Central bank still seeks a more convincing downward inflation trend
  • 03Headline inflation eased to 6.2% in July from 6.4% in June
  • 04Inflation remains above the BSP’s 3% target, keeping policy cautious

BSP signals room to slow monetary tightening

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Eli M. Remolona Jr. has said that weaker economic growth is giving policymakers scope to be less aggressive in future monetary tightening. The softer performance of the economy has eased the immediate pressure for large or rapid policy rate increases. This shift opens the possibility of a more measured pace of adjustments, rather than the stronger moves seen when growth and inflation pressures were both elevated.

Remolona’s remarks indicate that growth considerations are gaining weight in the central bank’s decision-making. Slower activity allows the BSP to assess how past rate hikes are feeding through to the real economy before committing to additional aggressive moves.

Inflation remains central to policy decisions

Despite the scope to slow tightening, Remolona stressed that the BSP will not relax its fight against elevated prices without stronger evidence of disinflation. He said the central bank needs a “more convincing downward trend” in inflation before it can consider easing its stance. This underscores that inflation control remains the primary objective, even as growth concerns rise.

Headline inflation eased to 6.2% in July from 6.4% in June, marking a modest improvement in price pressures. However, this pace is still well above the BSP’s 3% target. The gap between current inflation and the target explains why the central bank remains cautious about signaling any policy loosening.

Balancing growth risks and inflation pressures

The combination of softer growth and still-elevated inflation places the BSP in a balancing act. On one hand, weaker activity suggests that further sharp rate hikes could put additional strain on households and businesses. On the other hand, inflation has not yet shown the sustained decline needed to align with the central bank’s objective.

Remolona’s comments suggest that future decisions will weigh these competing forces, with the pace of any further tightening likely to be more gradual. The central bank’s focus remains on achieving a clearer and durable downtrend in inflation while avoiding unnecessary pressure on an already slowing economy.

Key Takeaways

  • 01The BSP is shifting from aggressive rate moves toward a more measured stance as growth softens, but without signaling an imminent policy easing.
  • 02Inflation’s modest decline is not yet sufficient for the central bank to consider relaxing its anti-inflation stance, given the 3% target.
  • 03Future policy decisions will hinge on whether inflation shows a sustained downward path while growth remains under pressure.
