US options markets are currently showing unusually heavy bullish weekly call activity, concentrated in SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY), Micron Technology (MU), Coinbase (COIN), Alphabet (GOOGL), and Intel (INTC). Traders are paying up for short-dated upside, with rich premium focused in out-of-the-money weekly strikes.
Historically, such concentrated upside call demand has often appeared during strong equity advances, as seen in the 2017-2018 SPY call-buying phase and the 2020-2021 tech and meme-stock call frenzy. In those episodes, dealer hedging against short call positions frequently reinforced upside by forcing incremental buying of the underlying as prices moved higher.
The current configuration aligns with that pattern: liquid, index-linked exposure in SPY, high-beta cyclicals like MU, a volatile crypto proxy in COIN, and mega-cap tech leadership via GOOGL and INTC. When short-dated call flow is this skewed to upside and sizable versus open interest, the resulting positive gamma dynamics have historically coincided with near-term strength in the underlying names, albeit with noisy reliability over longer horizons.
