FBM KLCI ends week at intraday high

Bursa Malaysia’s key index ended the trading week slightly higher, with the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) gaining 3.42 points, or 0.21%, to close at its intraday high of 1,611.56 at 5pm on Oct 23, 2026. The performance came despite generally cautious sentiment ahead of the weekend, as selective buying in index heavyweights helped support the benchmark.

The index opened the day 0.51 of a point lower at 1,607.63 and slipped to an intraday low of 1,604.38 during the mid-morning session before recovering. Its eventual close above the 1,600 level underscored the impact of targeted interest in larger-cap names even as overall conviction remained modest.

Trading activity and market breadth

Overall trading activity was firm, with total turnover rising to 3.18 billion units valued at RM2.47 billion. This came in the context of fragile sentiment following a technology-led correction on Wall Street, yet domestic participation remained sufficient to lift the main index.

Market breadth reflected a mixed session. Decliners and gainers were almost evenly matched at 529 and 528 counters respectively, while 532 counters ended unchanged. In addition, 1,312 counters were untraded and 16 were suspended, pointing to selective rather than broad-based interest across the bourse.

Performance of index heavyweights

Gains in several key index constituents underpinned the FBM KLCI’s advance. Maybank rose nine sen to RM10.06, while Public Bank added four sen to RM4.75. Tenaga Nasional advanced six sen to RM13.30, and CIMB closed flat at RM7.15, reflecting stable performance among major financial and utility names.

Not all large-cap stocks participated in the uptrend. IHH Healthcare eased nine sen to RM7.90. Among the top losers, Malaysian Pacific Industries and Hong Leong Bank each fell 30 sen to RM40.00 and RM21.20 respectively, while Press Metal declined 21 sen to RM6.73 and Genting Plantations slipped 18 sen to RM5.11.

Broader index moves across the market

Beyond the benchmark index, broader market gauges also recorded gains. The FBM Mid 70 Index strengthened by 51.96 points to 17,170.33, signalling interest in mid-cap counters. The FBM Emas Index climbed 28.95 points to 11,993.45, reflecting the overall improvement in listed equities.

Shariah-compliant and larger-cap segments also posted advances. The FBM Emas Shariah Index rose 11.59 points to 11,943.57, while the FBM Top 100 Index added 27.78 points. In contrast, activity on the ACE Market moderated, with volume declining to 432.38 million units worth RM153.16 million from previous levels, highlighting more subdued interest in smaller growth counters.

Key Takeaways

  • 01Selective buying in heavyweight stocks was sufficient to lift the FBM KLCI, even as broader sentiment stayed cautious.
  • 02Market breadth and turnover data show an active but highly selective trading environment rather than a broad rally.
  • 03Gains across the main, mid-cap, and Shariah indices indicate resilience in core segments of the market, while the ACE Market saw softer activity.
