China clears Apple’s AI with Alibaba Qwen tie-up

On July 15, 2026, China’s Cyberspace Administration included Apple Intelligence, Apple’s on-device generative AI service, on a list of newly approved providers. This registration represents a formal regulatory clearance for the product in mainland China, a key prerequisite for launching advanced AI features in the country.

By securing a place on the regulator’s approved list, Apple gains access to one of the world’s most competitive smartphone markets with its latest AI technology. The move follows the emergence of a broader ecosystem of generative AI services in China subject to official vetting and licensing.

The same regulatory list that now includes Apple Intelligence also features generative AI offerings from domestic smartphone brands such as Huawei and Xiaomi (1810.HK). Placement on this list signals that Apple’s tools are being treated in line with leading local providers under China’s AI governance framework.
