Electric vehicle interior door handle and emergency release illustrating TSLA safety recall in China

Key Points

  • 01China orders recall of about 2.98 million Tesla (TSLA) vehicles over emergency door handle concerns
  • 02Issue involves hard-to-identify mechanical door releases in several Tesla (TSLA) models
  • 03Automakers will use warning labels and software updates instead of hardware changes
  • 04Move is part of a wider auto-safety campaign and future ban on hidden handles

China launches large Tesla recall on door-safety issue

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation has ordered Tesla (TSLA) to recall about 2.98 million vehicles in the country due to safety concerns over interior emergency mechanical door releases. The action applies to a wide range of models, including China-made Model 3 and Model Y cars as well as imported Model 3, Model S and Model X vehicles.

Regulators concluded that the emergency mechanical door handles in these vehicles are difficult to identify and operate. They cited the colour of the handles, which is similar to surrounding interior trim, and the concealed design as factors that could hinder quick use in an emergency.

The regulator highlighted the risk in extreme situations such as a severe collision that causes a low-voltage system failure. In such cases, delayed operation of the mechanical release could slow occupants’ exit from the vehicle and impede rescue efforts by first responders.

Scope across models and additional imported units

The recall encompasses most China-produced Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, which make up the bulk of Tesla’s sales in the country. In addition, roughly 46,000 imported Model 3, Model S and Model X vehicles are included in the campaign, broadening the impact beyond domestic production.

The Tesla action forms part of a wider recall programme that spans multiple manufacturers. Across all affected brands, the coordinated recalls have been described as involving about 4.0 million vehicles, underscoring the breadth of the safety push in China’s fast-growing electric-vehicle market.

Remedies via labels and software, not hardware

Tesla and other manufacturers are not planning wholesale hardware replacement of the door handles on the affected vehicles. Instead, the primary remedies will be to attach warning labels near the interior emergency releases and to adjust vehicle software.

Over-the-air software updates will introduce a strategy to automatically lower windows after certain types of collisions. This measure is intended to improve the ability of occupants to exit the vehicle and to facilitate access for rescuers when the low-voltage system is compromised.

The reliance on software and labelling allows the companies to implement changes remotely and rapidly across a large fleet. It also reflects the growing role of software updates in addressing safety and compliance issues in modern vehicles, particularly in electric models.

Regulatory shift on hidden door handles

Chinese authorities have linked the recall wave to evolving safety standards for vehicle door systems. New rules will ban fully hidden door handles on all new vehicle models from January 1, 2027, requiring designs that make emergency exits easier to locate and operate.

The current recall effectively accelerates compliance with these forthcoming standards for existing vehicles already on the road. For Tesla and other manufacturers, the action signals the need to adapt interior and exterior door designs for future models destined for the Chinese market.

The combination of immediate recalls and future design mandates demonstrates a more assertive approach to auto safety oversight in China. It also underscores that interior usability, not only crash resistance, is a central focus of regulators examining next-generation electric vehicles.

Key Takeaways

  • 01The recall underscores China’s increasing scrutiny of safety features specific to electric vehicles, including how easily occupants can exit after a power failure.
  • 02By relying on warning labels and over-the-air updates, Tesla and other automakers can address regulatory concerns quickly while avoiding large-scale hardware replacements.
  • 03Forthcoming rules banning fully hidden door handles from 2027 will influence future vehicle design choices for manufacturers competing in the Chinese market.
  • 04The multi-manufacturer campaign involving about 4.0 million vehicles shows that door-handle accessibility is now a sector-wide compliance issue, not limited to one brand.
  • 05Tesla’s large recall footprint in China highlights both the scale of its local fleet and its exposure to changes in Chinese safety regulation.
