Idle industrial robotic arm on a quiet factory floor as funding for China physical AI and humanoid robots slows

  • 01Investment in China’s physical AI and humanoid robots fell 40.1% in September to 11.6 billion yuan
  • 02Third-quarter sector funding slid to 33.335 billion yuan, below the first-half quarterly average
  • 03Tighter IPO reviews now demand sustained revenue, shrinking losses and real innovation
  • 04Early-stage deals and leading players like AgiBot still attract capital

Funding slump hits China’s humanoid robot sector

Investment in China’s physical AI and humanoid robot sector fell sharply in September, dropping 40.1% in a single month to 11.6 billion yuan from 19.4 billion yuan in August. The share of total investment accounted for by the top 10 projects also declined, slipping to 59.4% from 67.7%. Third-quarter funding reached 33.335 billion yuan, which was 28.7% below the quarterly average implied by first-half investment of 93.5 billion yuan. These figures signal a clear cooling in capital flows to larger projects across the industry.

The slowdown reflects a marked shift from the earlier funding frenzy around humanoid robot companies, which STCN reported has entered a cooling phase. Valuations at many physical AI companies are described as already high, leading investors to exercise greater caution when considering additional commitments.

Tighter IPO rules reshape exit expectations

The immediate trigger for weaker investment is reduced optimism about early exits via initial public offerings after Chinese authorities tightened listing reviews. The China Securities Regulatory Commission has, through informal guidance, signaled a higher bar for approving humanoid robot listings. Companies are now expected to demonstrate a sustained ability to generate revenue, a credible path to narrowing losses, and substantive technological innovation, not just the capacity to raise large sums or show robot prototypes.

These stricter standards have already affected listing plans. Galaxea AI, a humanoid robot maker pursuing a Hong Kong listing, saw its timetable disrupted after failing to meet the tougher requirements. Regulators’ concerns are linked to overheated competition among more than 150 robot companies and the risk that overly similar products could flood the market and constrain research and development resources.

Market overheating and regulatory concerns

China’s National Development and Reform Commission has publicly warned against a situation where very similar robot products overwhelm the market and put pressure on R&D capacity. The volatile share price of Unitree, a humanoid robot maker that listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s STAR Market in August, is a factor behind the tighter rules.

Even before listing, Unitree, regarded as one of the sector’s largest players, faced bubble warnings due to its reliance on government bodies and research institutions for a significant share of its revenue and the slowing pace of its revenue growth. These dynamics contributed to policymakers’ and investors’ reassessment of risk and sustainability in the humanoid robot market.

Selective capital still targets leading players

Despite the overall funding decline, capital continues to reach early-stage firms and leading industry names. The number of seed, angel and pre-Series A deals increased from 19 to 24 between August and September, indicating that investors remain active at the earliest stages even as they avoid large transactions. Investor sentiment is described as moving from broad enthusiasm to more selective rationality, with greater focus on commercialization and justification for high valuations.

Major players are still securing backing and pursuing public listings. AgiBot, viewed alongside Unitree as one of the two heavyweights in the field, has begun raising about 1 billion to 1.5 billion yuan in new funding and was recently valued at roughly 50 billion yuan. Noetix Robotics, a Beijing-based humanoid robot maker, has confidentially filed for a Hong Kong listing. These developments suggest that while the broader sector undergoes a shakeout, leading companies with stronger perceived prospects continue to attract investor interest.

Key Takeaways

  • 01Sector-wide funding has cooled sharply, but the pullback is concentrated in larger deals while early-stage activity remains resilient.
  • 02Stricter IPO standards are reshaping exit routes and pushing companies to prove sustainable revenue, reduced losses and real innovation.
  • 03Regulatory concern over speculative trading and product homogeneity is driving a shakeout that favors better-capitalized and more advanced players.
