Core Goods Disinflation Puts Retailers In Focus

Core U.S. goods inflation excluding used autos has recently moved lower, with about a 1.5% annualized decline in this subcomponent. That shift is statistically plausible and consistent with periods when goods prices have shown disinflation or mild deflation. The measure captures price changes rather than absolute price levels, so it reflects a slowing in the pace of goods price increases rather than outright reversals of past gains.

Historically, tariff effects on consumer prices have tended to materialize within roughly 6-12 months after imposition, with limited additional pass-through beyond that window. In the 2018-2019 U.S.-China tariff period and again around the 2020-2022 pandemic goods spike, subsequent cooling in core goods inflation occurred alongside stable tariffs, while broader macro factors like supply chains, inventories, and demand patterns played a growing role. Those episodes underscore that any link between current goods disinflation and tariff-related pressures is conditional and not guaranteed.

If the current decline in core goods ex used autos is partly reflecting cooler tariff-driven cost pressures rather than weaker demand alone, large U.S. retailers exposed to imported merchandise become important to watch. Companies such as Walmart (WMT), Target (TGT), Costco (COST), and Best Buy (BBY) are significant buyers of tariff-affected categories like apparel, home goods, and electronics. For these names, slower growth in input costs would primarily affect inflation rates they face, with revenue, margin, and competitive dynamics then shaped by how they balance pricing and promotions in response.

Terminology

  • 01Pass-through: Transmission of cost changes, such as tariffs, into final consumer prices.
  • 02Core goods inflation: Price changes for goods excluding volatile items, used to gauge underlying trends.
  • 03Disinflation: A sustained slowdown in the rate of price increases, not falling prices.
