Nuclear submarine under construction in a shipyard as defence and capital investment reshape industry

Court extends pause on Paramount–Warner Bros. merger

A US federal court has extended the pause on Paramount Skydance Corp.’s proposed $110 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. for an additional two weeks, moving the deadline to Aug. 17. The order came from a judge in California who is overseeing multiple challenges to the transaction. The extension keeps the deal on hold while the court considers requests to delay it further.

The judge remains scheduled to hold a hearing on Aug. 3 to decide whether the pause should continue until a trial next year aimed at blocking the merger permanently. This hearing will shape the timetable for the transaction and determine whether the companies face a prolonged injunction period.

Paramount has asked the court to allow a three-day evidentiary hearing in August before ruling on any longer delay. The company wants an opportunity to present evidence on the impact of an extended pause on the takeover before the judge issues a decision.

Dangote Cement targets London for secondary listing

Dangote Cement Plc is preparing a secondary listing of its cement business and has indicated a preference for London over Dubai as the venue. Board member Mariya Dangote said the London market is seen as more compatible with the company’s business and would allow a quicker sale of shares than Dubai.

The group had considered Dubai but concluded that securing a listing there could take years. By contrast, it views London as offering a more efficient route to accessing international investors and providing liquidity for its shares.

In a recent video segment, Mariya and Fatima Dangote discussed preparations for the secondary listing and indicated the company is targeting a London listing by the end of the year. The comments underscore that the listing plan is in an active preparation phase rather than an early-stage idea.

Australia boosts funding for Osborne Naval Shipyard

Australia has announced it will allocate A$4.6 billion, about US$3.2 billion, to the government-run Osborne Naval Shipyard in South Australia. Defence Minister Richard Marles outlined the plan, which is aimed at preparing the facility to build nuclear-powered submarines.

The A$4.6 billion commitment is in addition to A$3.9 billion announced in February for the same shipyard program. The combined funding is intended to transform the Osborne facility into a key centre for submarine construction under Australia’s long-term defence plans.

New investment at Osborne will focus on building out infrastructure and training workers to handle the specialised demands of nuclear-powered submarine construction. The outlay is designed to expand capacity and develop the skills base required for the future fleet.

Key Takeaways

  • 01The Paramount–Warner Bros. deal now faces a tighter judicial timetable, with an August hearing likely to determine whether it can proceed on schedule.
  • 02Paramount is pushing for an evidentiary hearing to influence the court’s decision on any long-term pause, highlighting the stakes for the merger’s timing.
  • 03Dangote Cement’s move toward a London secondary listing signals a preference for speed and market compatibility over alternative venues.
  • 04Australia’s additional A$4.6 billion for Osborne consolidates the shipyard’s role as a central asset in its nuclear-powered submarine plans.
  • 05Across sectors, courts, capital markets, and defence commitments are reshaping the timelines and structures of major corporate and government projects.
