Drone strike heightens Strait of Hormuz risks

President Donald Trump said on Friday that Iran fired at least four one-way attack drones at ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. He stated that U.S. forces intercepted and shot down three of the drones, while one struck the upper deck of a cargo-carrying vessel. Trump described the action as a violation of the existing ceasefire arrangement.

The attack occurred in one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, where commercial shipping regularly passes between the Gulf and global markets. U.S. Central Command said that, although the U.S. military is no longer conducting a blockade of Iranian ports, its forces remain present and vigilant throughout the region.

The British military reported that a vessel was struck by a projectile off the coast of Oman. The ship sustained damage to its bridge or upper deck, consistent with Trump’s description of a drone hitting the upper structure of a cargo ship. The ship’s master reported no casualties and no environmental impact from the incident.

The location of the strike, near the Omani side of the waterway, underscores the vulnerability of shipping in the approach to the Strait of Hormuz. While no injuries or pollution were reported, the incident highlighted the potential risks to crews, vessels and cargo from further attacks or miscalculations.

Following the damage to the vessel near Oman, the International Maritime Organization temporarily paused its scheme to evacuate stranded ships and seafarers from the Gulf. The program had been moving hundreds of ships and thousands of crew members out of higher-risk areas. The pause reflects the need to reassess safety conditions after the latest strike.

The suspension of the evacuation effort adds another layer of uncertainty for maritime operators already navigating security challenges in the region. Shipping companies and crews now face delays and a prolonged period of elevated risk while authorities review procedures and seek assurances that similar incidents can be prevented.

The drone incident comes during what has been described as a fragile period in the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran. Trump framed the strike as a breach of last week’s understanding, at a time when negotiators are working on an interim peace arrangement.
