Drone strikes hit two merchant ships in Black Sea

Ukrainian authorities have described both targeted ships as civilian vessels engaged in commercial activity. The attacks did not sink either vessel, but they did cause casualties and disruption to normal operations. The incidents highlight how even non-military ships operating in the Black Sea face direct physical danger.

Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration, Oleksii Kuleba, said the drone strikes hit two foreign-flagged civilian vessels in the Black Sea. He stated that the combined toll was one person dead and five injured. Kuleba characterized the attacks as further evidence that Russia is waging a war against freedom of navigation, international trade and global food security, and called for international condemnation of strikes on civilian shipping.

Panama’s Maritime Authority confirmed that a Panama-flagged ship was hit, with one crew member killed and two injured. The authority said it had activated relevant protocols and was communicating with the parties involved. It also advised ships to avoid both Ukrainian and Russian waters in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, reflecting heightened concern over the safety of maritime routes in these areas.
