Dubai Airport traffic drops 31% in H1 2026

Dubai International Airport reported that it handled 31.5 million passengers in the first half of 2026, representing a decline of about 31% compared with the same period a year earlier. The figures underline a substantial reduction in activity at what is described as the world’s biggest international aviation hub.

The contraction in passenger volumes highlights the impact of regional instability on a major global transit point. The scale of the decline in such a short period marks one of the more challenging operating environments for the airport in recent years.

The airport attributed the downturn in traffic primarily to disruption from the Iran war and related regional airspace constraints. These conditions affected airline schedules and available capacity, limiting the number of flights and routes that could operate through the hub.

Restrictions and rerouting in surrounding airspace have made it harder for carriers to maintain previous levels of connectivity. As a result, both origin-and-destination demand and transfer traffic through Dubai have been constrained during the first half of the year.

In the second quarter of 2026, Dubai International recorded 13 million passengers. While this contributed to the overall year-on-year decline, the airport noted that traffic volumes rose in May and June, indicating that demand was starting to improve as the quarter progressed.

The late-quarter pickup suggests that some airlines have begun to restore capacity or adjust operations within the limits of prevailing airspace conditions. This emerging momentum is seen as a foundation for better performance in the remainder of the year.

The weakening in passenger traffic was mirrored in aircraft movements. Dubai International recorded about 150,600 aircraft movements in the first half of 2026, a decrease of roughly 32.1% year-on-year.

The parallel declines in passengers and flights point to a broad-based reduction in activity rather than a shift driven mainly by load factors or aircraft size. Fewer flights across the network reflect the operational constraints airlines have faced during the period.

Despite the weak first-half performance, Dubai Airports indicated that demand is expected to pick up in the latter part of 2026. The improvement in May and June is viewed as the beginning of a gradual recovery in travel flows.

As airlines adapt to regional conditions and rebuild capacity, the airport anticipates that connectivity and passenger volumes will strengthen. The expectation is that second-half performance will be supported by the momentum already visible at the end of the second quarter.
