Handmade craft item in a photo setup illustrating Etsy ETSY rules on real photos versus AI-generated content

Key Points

  • 01Etsy (ETSY) has banned AI-generated functional guides such as patterns, recipes and instructions
  • 02New rules prohibit bot-generated listings that go live without human involvement
  • 03Most physical items must now feature at least one unedited photo of the actual product
  • 04AI-generated art and other creative works remain allowed with disclosure and human input

Etsy bans AI-made recipes, patterns and instructions

Etsy has announced a ban on AI-generated functional guides, blocking the sale of patterns, recipes and instructions that are created by artificial intelligence rather than by the seller. The change covers products such as crochet, knitting, sewing, embroidery, quilting and beading patterns, as well as cooking recipes, woodworking and construction plans, instruction manuals and other task-focused guides. For these listings, the information buyers rely on to create or use the item must now be the seller’s own work, not generated by AI. Etsy also requires these products to show an actual result made using the seller’s instructions, rather than an AI-generated or simulated outcome.

The company explains that functional guides are expected to provide usable instructions that produce a particular result, and AI-generated instructions may contain errors that buyers only discover after investing time and materials. As a result, AI-generated recipes, patterns and similar guides are no longer allowed on the platform. Sellers whose listings are removed under the updated standards can submit an appeal through the existing policy violation process in Shop Manager.

Bot-generated listings and AI disclosure requirements

Alongside the content ban for functional guides, Etsy is prohibiting bot-generated listings that are created and published without any human involvement. Listings produced automatically in bulk by tools or scripts and pushed live to a shop without review now violate policy and may be removed, with repeat or severe issues potentially leading to shop removal. Etsy emphasizes that the restriction targets fully automated listing creation, not every use of AI tools in a seller’s workflow.

Etsy continues to allow AI-generated art and other AI-assisted creative products provided sellers play a clear creative role and are transparent about their process. Examples include artwork based on a seller’s original prompts or inputs produced by an AI generator. Sellers must still disclose when an item is created using AI and cannot misrepresent AI-generated work as handmade or entirely their own creation. AI prompt bundles remain prohibited.

New listing image requirements for physical and digital items

The updated rules extend beyond AI-written content to listing imagery. Most listings must now include at least one unedited photograph of the actual item against a real background, with exceptions for some print-on-demand products, digital downloads and customized or made-to-order items. Under these requirements, sellers offering craft patterns, recipes, seeds and similar items must show a real, unedited photograph of a finished result made or grown using the product. An AI-generated image can no longer be the only picture used to show a finished result for functional guides.

All listing photos, including those edited with AI tools, must accurately represent the item a buyer will receive. Editing for lighting, colour, cropping or backgrounds is permitted on additional images as long as the result remains truthful, but the mandated unedited photo for eligible physical products cannot be altered. Most digital downloads must show a preview or excerpt of what buyers will receive, while digital products without visual content, such as audio files, may use representative imagery, including AI-generated images, provided it is not misleading.

Buyer confusion, reporting tools and enforcement

Etsy identifies buyer confusion around AI content as a key motivation for the changes, noting that many active buyers say they cannot tell which items involve AI-generated content, making it a top-three barrier to shopping more often on the platform. Etsy acknowledges that concerns about AI products flooding the marketplace have persisted for years, and that sellers have raised issues with AI-generated crochet patterns and listing images that did not match achievable results.

To support enforcement, Etsy is investing in stronger detection tools and updating the listing form to show guidance when AI-generated images are detected during upload, with plans to extend this to existing listings. A new reporting reason on listing pages lets members flag products that may use misleading AI imagery; initially, these reports will be used to understand member concerns rather than trigger immediate enforcement. Listings that do not meet the image rules may be removed, and sellers can be held responsible for refunds if buyers receive items that are materially different from what was advertised, with repeated violations potentially escalating to shop removal.

Key Takeaways

  • 01Etsy’s update draws a clear line between functional guides, which must be human-made, and creative AI-assisted products, which remain allowed with disclosure.
  • 02The requirement for at least one unedited photo of the actual item raises the bar on listing accuracy and may compel many sellers to adjust photography workflows.
  • 03By banning bot-generated listings and adding tools for detecting and reporting misleading AI imagery, Etsy (ETSY) is tying AI policy directly to buyer trust and marketplace integrity.
