Key Points

  • 01Firmus cancels planned ASX IPO scheduled for Oct. 10, 2026
  • 02Scrapped listing had targeted about US$5 billion in proceeds
  • 03IPO marketing implied equity valuation near US$30.6 billion
  • 04Investors questioned valuation, debt needs and execution risk

Firmus cancels high-profile ASX debut

Firmus, an Nvidia (NVDA)-backed operator of AI-focused data centres, withdrew its planned initial public offering on the Australian Securities Exchange on Oct. 10, 2026. The company abandoned a listing that had targeted roughly US$5 billion, or around A$7 billion, in proceeds. It said market volatility and prevailing conditions meant the proposed IPO terms did not appropriately reflect the business. Firmus stated it will instead pursue private-market financing and continue to consider other public- and private-market options.

Deal documentation showed the IPO was marketed at A$11 per share. Multiple accounts indicated that, at this level, the offering would raise about US$5 billion and imply an equity valuation in the vicinity of US$30.6 billion. Some reports cited figures in both Australian and U.S. dollars, but all pointed to a large implied valuation relative to the company’s current operating scale.

Valuation, leverage and execution concerns

Prospective investors and analysts who stepped back from the transaction highlighted several risk factors. They cited discomfort with the rapid rise in Firmus’s implied valuation compared with prior funding rounds. In addition, analysts linked the company’s data-centre buildout plans to potential borrowing needs of roughly US$30 billion, raising questions about future leverage.

Execution risk was another central concern. Reporting indicated that Firmus had about 46 megawatts of operating capacity at the time of the planned IPO. This was set against more than 900 megawatts that were contracted or planned in its pipeline. The gap between existing operations and the growth ambitions embedded in the valuation contributed to investor caution.

Financial disclosures underscored these worries. Firmus’s most recent reported revenue was about US$50–51 million, which is modest relative to the multibillion-dollar equity valuation suggested by the IPO pricing range. This contrast between current revenues and targeted market value was a frequent point of discussion among potential buyers of the shares.

Role of Nvidia and broader AI market tone

Nvidia (NVDA) participated in recent Firmus financing rounds and supported chip purchases for the company, giving Firmus a prominent strategic backer. However, coverage stressed that this relationship did not translate into sufficient public-market demand at the proposed IPO valuation. The cancelled float illustrated that association with leading AI suppliers does not guarantee investor acceptance of ambitious pricing.

Market reports linked Firmus’s decision to a wider reassessment of AI-related capital raising. The withdrawal coincided with short-term weakness in several AI-linked stocks during the same trading session. Names cited included Nvidia (NVDA) and other AI component suppliers, which saw share price declines amid a broader market swing. The unsuccessful listing attempt was viewed within this context of more selective appetite for large AI infrastructure financings.

Key Takeaways

  • 01Firmus’s decision to abandon a large ASX IPO underscores investor reluctance to back aggressive AI infrastructure valuations when current revenues and assets are limited.
  • 02Concerns over high projected borrowing needs and a sizeable buildout pipeline indicate that balance-sheet risk is a key focus for institutional investors in capital-intensive AI projects.
  • 03Nvidia’s backing and chip supply support proved insufficient to overcome valuation and risk worries, highlighting that strategic partnerships alone do not secure public-market demand.
  • 04The timing of the withdrawal alongside weakness in AI-linked stocks suggests that sentiment toward AI financing has become more discriminating, especially for large, debt-heavy ventures.
