Fortescue warns of profit impact from China dispute

Fortescue Ltd has cautioned that its full-year profit is at risk due to a prolonged pricing standoff with state-backed buyer China Mineral Resources Group (CMRG). The warning has unsettled investors, with the miner’s shares falling more than 4% after the update. The dispute centers on iron ore supply contract pricing, a key determinant of Fortescue’s revenue and earnings profile.

The company indicated that the negotiations with CMRG have been ongoing for months without a long-term resolution. In the meantime, Fortescue is relying on short-term agreements to keep product flowing into its largest export market. This temporary arrangement adds uncertainty around sales volumes, pricing, and cash flow for the remainder of the financial year.

Standoff disrupts sales and increases inventories

Fortescue reported first-quarter iron ore shipments of 46.8 million tonnes, while sales reached only 42.9 million tonnes. The 3.9 million tonne shortfall highlights the impact of delayed cargoes and constrained purchasing from Chinese buyers. The company also expects product inventories to increase by a further 4–5 million tonnes in October.

Reports state that CMRG has coordinated with Chinese steel mills to delay taking cargoes and to limit buying of Fortescue product. This has contributed to a mismatch between physical shipments and booked sales, tying up material in stockpiles rather than converting it into revenue. The resulting inventory build raises the risk of near-term cash flow pressure and potential adjustments to operating plans.

Guidance maintained but operational risks remain

Despite the dispute and growing inventories, Fortescue has maintained its fiscal 2027 shipment guidance of 197–207 million tonnes. The miner also reaffirmed its hematite C1 unit cost guidance at US$20.50–US$21.75 per wet metric tonne. Keeping these targets signals that, for now, the company expects to sustain planned production and cost levels.

However, Fortescue has warned that operations may be affected if the negotiations with CMRG are not concluded by the end of the calendar year. Management flagged the possibility that operations, potentially including production, could require adjustment should the standoff persist. This introduces ongoing uncertainty for volumes, margins, and capital allocation in the coming months.

Market reaction underscores earnings concerns

The share price decline of more than 4% following the announcement reflects investor concern about earnings and sales visibility. Market participants are weighing the risk that unsold volumes and elevated inventories could drag on profitability if the dispute is not resolved. The situation places heightened focus on the outcome and timing of the CMRG negotiations.

With shipments currently outpacing sales and contractual arrangements limited to short-term deals, Fortescue’s near-term performance is closely tied to developments in China. The company’s ability to maintain its shipment and cost guidance while managing inventory and cash flow will remain central to assessing its financial outlook as the talks continue.

Key Takeaways

  • 01Fortescue faces immediate earnings and cash flow risk as shipments exceed sales and inventories rise amid the CMRG dispute.
  • 02Maintaining shipment and cost guidance signals operational resilience, but the company itself warns that plans may change if talks drag on.
  • 03The more than 4% share price drop highlights market sensitivity to contract risk with major Chinese buyers and its impact on profit visibility.
