Global M&A Surges Past $2.6 Trillion

Global merger-and-acquisition activity posted a sharp rebound in the first half of 2026, with transaction values reaching about $2.6 trillion. Data show this represents an increase of around 30% compared with the same period a year earlier, underscoring a strong recovery in dealmaking.

The expansion in value highlights renewed appetite for corporate transactions across regions and sectors. After a quieter period in parts of the previous cycle, companies have returned to large-scale deals, significantly lifting the overall dollar volume of announced and completed transactions.

A prominent feature of the first half was the rise in very large transactions. Companies struck 38 deals valued at $10 billion or more, the highest number ever recorded for any six-month span. This marks an unprecedented concentration of mega-deals in the global M&A market.

The prevalence of such large transactions suggests that a relatively small number of strategic moves is accounting for a substantial share of total deal value. Corporate buyers are using sizable acquisitions to pursue scale, expand portfolios, or reshape their business mix, amplifying the impact of each individual deal on headline M&A statistics.

On the back of this strong first-half performance, dealmakers are regarded as being on course to potentially surpass the $5 trillion annual record for global M&A set in 2021. The $2.6 trillion already recorded halfway through the year sets a high base for the remainder of 2026.

Whether that full-year mark is ultimately exceeded will depend on sustaining current activity levels, particularly in the large-deal segment that has dominated recent figures. Nonetheless, the first-half data alone confirm a robust M&A environment, with elevated transaction values and record mega-deal counts defining the current phase of the market.
