GM, Unifor reach tentative Canada investment deal

General Motors (GM) has reached a tentative labor agreement with Unifor covering thousands of autoworkers in Ontario. The agreement sets out new commitments for GM’s Canadian manufacturing footprint and is subject to ratification by union members. It outlines a package of investments and plant-related assurances intended to support production and jobs in the province.

The tentative deal follows sector-wide bargaining activity and comes at a time when cross-border trade conditions are under scrutiny. The agreement’s terms will only take effect if Unifor members approve them in scheduled ratification votes.

Under the tentative agreement, GM plans to invest about C$1.1 billion in its Canadian auto factories. This multi-plant commitment is focused on enhancing production capabilities and supporting future vehicle programs in Ontario. The investment package spans several GM facilities named in union bargaining materials.

The scale of the planned spending underscores the strategic role of Canada’s auto sector within GM’s North American manufacturing network. The investment is framed as part of a broader effort to align Canadian operations with evolving product plans and market demand.

A key element of the tentative deal is a planned C$144 million investment at GM’s Oshawa, Ontario plant. The bargaining report states this funding would be used to add next-generation heavy-duty GMC Sierra pickup assembly at the facility. This would build on Oshawa’s existing truck operations and further anchor pickup production in Canada.

The addition of next-generation heavy-duty pickup capability is positioned as a way to secure and expand Oshawa’s role in GM’s truck portfolio. It also reflects ongoing demand for heavy-duty pickups in North American markets.

The tentative agreement also addresses GM’s CAMI/Ingersoll assembly plant. The bargaining report indicates GM has pledged not to immediately sell or close the facility as part of the package. This commitment is intended to provide greater near-term stability for the plant and its workforce.

While the pledge does not detail long-term product plans for CAMI, it offers assurances on the plant’s immediate status within the company’s Canadian manufacturing system. The measure forms part of the broader framework aimed at preserving industrial capacity in Ontario.

The tentative GM–Unifor agreement has emerged against a backdrop of heightened U.S. tariff threats on Canadian auto goods. This environment has increased attention on where companies commit capital and maintain production. Stakeholders have highlighted that uncertainty over trade measures adds pressure to investment and sourcing decisions.
