Hyundai resets schedule for in-house driver assistance

Hyundai Motor Group plans to introduce vehicles equipped with its proprietary driver-assistance software in late 2029. This marks a two-year delay from an earlier internal target of late 2027 and reshapes the company’s roadmap for automated driving features. The in-house platform is called Atria and is intended to underpin Hyundai’s future driver-assistance capabilities across its brands.

These systems will be built on Nvidia’s Hyperion 10 platform and deployed across Hyundai Motor Group vehicles. Hyundai and Nvidia plan to co-design the technology, rather than relying on an off-the-shelf solution.

Park Min-woo, a president at Hyundai Motor Group, described the collaboration as "not about leaving our destiny entirely in their hands," highlighting Hyundai’s intention to retain strategic control. Data collected from the Nvidia-powered systems will be used to train and refine the Atria platform, creating a feedback loop between the interim and in-house solutions.

Sensor strategy and path toward higher automation

Hyundai’s initial Nvidia-based systems will omit lidar and rely on a sensor suite made up of cameras, ultrasonic sensors and radar. The company is still considering the use of lidar sensors for its planned Level 3 automated systems but has not provided a timeline for when such Level 3 capabilities might be commercialised. Park has emphasized that sensor redundancy is critical as Hyundai progresses toward higher levels of automation.
