  • 03A stronger rupee and tight supplies are key drivers of the price gains

Indian rice export prices reach one-year high

Indian rice export prices climbed further this week to their highest level in more than a year, supported by a stronger rupee and tight supplies. India’s 5% broken parboiled variety was quoted at $387-$392 per ton, while 5% broken white rice was priced at $389-$394 per ton. These dollar-denominated offers reflect both currency movements and expectations of a smaller exportable surplus.

The appreciation of the Indian rupee in recent days has prompted exporters to raise quoted prices in order to maintain local-currency returns. When the rupee strengthens against the US dollar, exporters often adjust their dollar prices upward to offset the foreign-exchange impact on revenues.

Production outlook and supply constraints

Industry officials expect India’s rice production to fall this year for the first time in a decade and by the most in nearly 20 years. Below-normal rainfall during the crop’s maturation period has threatened yields, reinforcing concerns about tighter supplies. With India a major global supplier, a decline in its crop affects the volume of rice available to international buyers.

The prospect of lower output, combined with firm export quotations, suggests less exportable surplus from India in the near term. Even though current demand is described as modest, the supply outlook has been a central factor underpinning the recent price gains.

Regional price levels across Asia

Outside India, benchmark rice prices in other major Asian exporters have been comparatively stable. Vietnam’s 5% broken rice was offered at $440-$450 per metric ton, unchanged from a week earlier. In Thailand, 5% broken rice was quoted at $480 per ton, also flat week-on-week.

Traders noted demand from the Philippines as a supportive factor, with vessels arriving to load rice and helping to nudge some offers higher. At the same time, supply in parts of the region is currently being harvested, and market participants are monitoring how floodwaters and weather conditions will ultimately affect production.

Impact on importing countries and consumers

In Bangladesh, rice prices remained elevated amid rising fuel costs, and aromatic rice prices increased sharply after the government cut approved export quotas by 50%. These developments have added to the financial strain on consumers already coping with persistently high inflation.

Higher regional benchmarks, combined with India’s firmer export offers, contribute to a higher floor for Asian rice prices. For import-dependent countries and low-income consumers, sustained elevated prices raise concerns about food affordability and overall living costs.

Key Takeaways

  • 01Indian export prices for both parboiled and white rice have moved to multi-month highs, reflecting currency strength and concerns about supply.
  • 02Expectations of India’s first rice production decline in a decade, and the largest in nearly 20 years, are central to the firmer pricing backdrop.
  • 03Stable but higher price levels in Vietnam and Thailand indicate that the entire Asian rice market is operating on an elevated price base.
  • 04Importing nations such as Bangladesh and the Philippines face ongoing cost pressures, with high rice prices compounding the impact of fuel costs and inflation.
  • 05Currency movements, weather-related crop risks, and policy decisions on exports are currently the main levers shaping Asian rice price dynamics.
