  • 03Backlog hit a record $23B and orders jumped 44% year over year

Earnings beat puts Johnson Controls in focus

Johnson Controls delivered a stronger-than-expected finish to fiscal 2026, sending its stock sharply higher as investors reacted to both an earnings beat and robust forward guidance. In the fourth quarter, adjusted earnings came in at $1.66 per share, above the analyst consensus of $1.58. Revenue totaled $7.11 billion, exceeding expectations of $7.03 billion and rising 10% year over year. The company also reported 12% organic sales growth for the quarter, underscoring broad-based demand across its portfolio.

Profitability improved alongside the revenue strength. Adjusted EBIT margin expanded to 18% in the fourth quarter, an increase of 300 basis points. Management highlighted strong operating performance as a key driver, reflecting higher volumes and cost discipline.

Record backlog and surging orders

Demand indicators strengthened notably in the latest quarter. Company-wide orders increased 44% organically year over year, reflecting elevated activity across end markets. The Americas segment was particularly strong, with orders up 58% on an organic basis, excluding acquisitions, divestitures and foreign currency effects.

This order strength translated into a record backlog of $23 billion, up 43% organically from a year earlier. The backlog expansion has been supported by projects in data centers, battery and semiconductor manufacturing, and research universities. The enlarged backlog provides substantial revenue visibility heading into fiscal 2027.

Full-year 2026 performance and cash generation

For fiscal 2026 as a whole, Johnson Controls reported organic revenue growth of more than 8%. Adjusted earnings per share for the year increased 37%, outpacing sales growth and highlighting operating leverage. Adjusted free cash flow reached $3.2 billion, with conversion of 103%.

The company’s capital structure and capital returns also improved. Net debt to EBITDA was 1.8 times at year-end, below the target range. Shareholder returns for the year totaled $2.5 billion through share repurchases and dividends.

Raised outlook for fiscal 2027

Alongside the strong quarter, Johnson Controls issued higher guidance for fiscal 2027 that helped propel the stock. The company now expects organic revenue growth of 11% to 12% for the year. Adjusted earnings per share are projected between $6.15 and $6.30, implying 21% growth at the midpoint compared with the prior year.

Management also anticipates operating leverage above 30% in fiscal 2027 and approximately 95% adjusted free cash flow conversion, with capital expenditures of about $900 million. For the first quarter of fiscal 2027, the company is guiding to 12% to 14% organic sales growth, 30% to 35% operating leverage, and adjusted EPS of $1.15 to $1.20. The combination of an earnings beat, strong demand indicators and higher medium-term guidance has brought Johnson Controls’ outlook into sharper investor focus.

Key Takeaways

  • 01Johnson Controls coupled a Q4 earnings and revenue beat with improved margins, signalling stronger operational efficiency alongside growth.
  • 02A record $23 billion backlog and 44% organic order growth provide visibility into future revenue, particularly in data center and industrial projects.
  • 03The company’s 2027 guidance for double-digit organic growth and a 21% EPS increase marks an acceleration from 2026 and underpins positive market reaction.
