Meta and Reliance deepen AI infrastructure partnership

Meta Platforms and Reliance Industries have entered into an agreement to develop an AI-enabled data centre in India, marking a significant expansion of their existing technology partnership. Under the arrangement, Reliance will build the facility while Meta will lease capacity, aligning both companies around the rising demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure in one of Meta’s largest markets.

The new data centre will be located in Jamnagar, in the western Indian state of Gujarat. The project is framed as Meta’s first AI-focused data centre in the country, reflecting a move to place more compute and data resources closer to Indian users and enterprise customers.

Jamnagar site specifications and scalability

The first phase of the Jamnagar facility is designed to deliver 168 megawatts of capacity, which Meta will lease from Reliance. The agreement includes options to scale capacity further, allowing the partners to expand the site as AI workloads and digital services grow.

Meta has stated that the Jamnagar data centre will be powered by renewable energy and cooled using desalinated seawater. The company has also committed to bearing the full cost of the energy and water required to operate the facility, tying the project to its broader focus on sustainable infrastructure.

Clean energy arrangements supporting the project

To support its operations in India, Meta has contracted nearly 1 gigawatt of new clean and renewable energy capacity in the country. This includes agreements for 837 megawatts with CleanMax and 88 megawatts with Fourth Partner Energy.

These energy deals are intended to underpin Meta’s infrastructure footprint in India, including the planned Jamnagar facility, by aligning data centre growth with additional renewable power on the grid.

Building on an existing AI joint venture

The Jamnagar data centre initiative builds on an earlier joint venture between Reliance and Meta focused on deploying Llama-based enterprise AI solutions in India. That venture involves an initial combined investment of about Rs 855 crore.

Within this AI solutions joint venture, Reliance holds a roughly 70% stake while Meta holds roughly 30%. The new infrastructure plan at Jamnagar complements this existing collaboration by adding large-scale compute capacity to support AI services for enterprises and consumers.
