Key Points

  • 01NAB plans to cut up to 2,500 jobs, about 6% of its workforce
  • 02Up to 1,500 roles will go by end-2026, with the rest in FY 2027
  • 03Job cuts target corporate functions and senior management roles
  • 04NAB expects about A$300m in FY 2027 restructuring charges

NAB announces large-scale workforce reduction

National Australia Bank has unveiled plans to cut up to 2,500 jobs, equivalent to about 6% of its workforce, as part of a broad restructuring of its operations. The move is framed as an effort to simplify the bank’s operating model and better align its workforce with growth and technology initiatives.

Under the plan, up to 1,500 roles will be eliminated before the end of 2026, with the remaining reductions scheduled for the 2027 financial year. This staged approach spreads the impact of the cuts over multiple years while NAB reshapes its internal structure.

Focus on corporate functions and senior management

NAB said the job reductions will be concentrated in corporate functions and senior management, rather than front-line customer roles. The bank indicated there will be no material impact on customer-facing banking positions as it seeks to preserve service levels for clients.

Alongside the staff cuts, NAB plans to materially reduce its reliance on consultants and external contractors. These changes are presented as part of a broader effort to simplify processes and redirect resources toward areas seen as critical for future growth and technology development.

Financial impact of restructuring

The restructuring is expected to carry a significant one-off financial cost. NAB has flagged a pre-tax restructuring charge of about A$300 million in fiscal 2027 to cover redundancies, staff redeployment and organisational redesign.

By recognising the bulk of the restructuring charge in 2027, the bank is signalling that much of the financial impact of the overhaul will be accounted for once the job cuts and associated changes are largely implemented.

Union backlash over timing and scale

The Finance Sector Union has sharply criticised NAB’s decision to cut up to 2,500 roles. The union said it was appalled by the announcement and described the timing as disgraceful.

The FSU warned that the scale of the reductions would act as a wrecking ball to one of Australia’s largest workforces. The union’s reaction highlights the tension between NAB’s cost and efficiency drive and concerns about employment security in the banking sector.

Key Takeaways

  • 01NAB is undertaking a multi-year restructuring that will significantly reduce headcount while concentrating remaining resources on growth and technology priorities.
  • 02The bulk of job losses will come from corporate and senior management roles, with customer-facing positions largely shielded from the announced cuts.
  • 03A substantial A$300 million restructuring charge in fiscal 2027 underscores the scale of organisational change and the upfront cost of achieving longer-term efficiency gains.
