Oil Slide Knocks Yields, Shifts Fed Odds

Crude oil benchmarks are posting an 8-9% drop on the day as easing US–Iran tensions reduce geopolitical risk premia. The sudden move removes a layer of inflation pressure from energy, directly weighing on revenues and sentiment for oil producers and broader energy-linked cyclicals.

US Treasuries are rallying alongside the oil decline, pulling the 10-year yield down to roughly 4.64-4.65%, a few basis points below recent highs. The move is echoed across 2-year and 30-year maturities, reflecting a mix of safe-haven demand and softer term premia tied to lower inflation expectations.

At the same time, fed funds futures have pushed the probability of a quarter-point Federal Reserve rate hike at this week’s meeting into the mid-30% range, up from about the mid-teens a week earlier. The higher implied odds temper the bullish impact of lower long yields by preserving some near-term policy tightening risk.

Equity indices are reacting in a sector-specific way rather than via a broad risk-on or risk-off swing. Dow-style value and cyclical names are firmer on the combination of lower yields and reduced geopolitical tension, while growth- and chip-heavy Nasdaq-linked exposures are under pressure from both higher hike odds and sector-specific weakness.

Rate-sensitive assets such as REITs, utilities, and high-yield credit benefit from the modest easing in Treasury yields, with financing conditions fractionally less restrictive. However, the roughly one-in-three to two-in-five chance of an imminent Fed hike caps the scope for an aggressive duration bid or a sustained melt-up in high-multiple equities.
