Pentagon presses contractors to speed key weapons

Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg has directed major U.S. defense companies to accelerate production and delivery of key weapons systems, citing concerns about shortages and capability gaps. In an Aug. 5 letter to leading contractors, he warned that years-long development cycles are not acceptable and called for a dramatic acceleration of program schedules and expansion of production capacity.

The push focuses on capabilities viewed as critical to current and future operations. Feinberg’s directive underscores a shift toward compressing timelines for fielding complex systems that have traditionally taken many years to develop and deploy.

The Pentagon’s list of programs targeted for accelerated or increased procurement includes wide-area surveillance systems, air-defense sensors and interceptors, and missile-tracking systems. These capabilities are central to detecting, tracking and defeating airborne and missile threats across large regions.

Beyond these systems, the department also emphasized satellite communications and next-generation air-defense architectures as areas requiring faster delivery and greater capacity. Lockheed Martin’s (LMT) Next Generation Interceptor was specifically cited as one of the priority next-generation air-defense programs.

By spotlighting both sensing and intercept capabilities, as well as the communications infrastructure that links them, the directive aims at strengthening the broader integrated air and missile defense network rather than any single platform.

Feinberg asked the companies to submit plans in a short time frame, described as by late August or within 21 days of the Aug. 5 memo. These plans are expected to outline significantly faster, more aggressive delivery schedules and options for increased production capacity across the highlighted programs.

The compressed deadline signals urgency and places the onus on industry to identify how quickly they can ramp up output. It also sets the stage for potential adjustments to program baselines, manufacturing footprints and supply-chain arrangements to meet the Pentagon’s requirements.

The acceleration effort forms part of a broader modernization push that predates recent conflicts but has gained urgency amid concerns about inventory strains and emerging threats. By targeting surveillance, missile defense and communications, the Pentagon is focusing on systems that underpin many operational plans.

Feinberg’s explicit call to expand production capacity suggests a focus not only on near-term deliveries but also on the resilience and throughput of the defense industrial base. How contractors respond to the memo’s demands on schedule compression and capacity growth will shape the pace at which these critical systems reach the field over the coming years.
