Probe ties Eaton fire to SCE equipment

Los Angeles County fire officials have concluded that the 2025 Eaton fire was sparked by electrical arcing on an out-of-service Southern California Edison transmission tower. The finding is contained in investigative reports released on August 4, 2026, which identify the arcing events on the idle structure as the ignition source of the blaze.

The reports mark an official determination by local fire investigators about how the fire started. County officials said the work is intended to support lessons learned and ongoing recovery efforts following the conflagration.

The cause determination follows an investigation that lasted about 18 months. The review was led jointly by the Los Angeles County Arson Fire Investigation Unit and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, with assistance from retained electrical and metallurgical experts.

Investigators focused on an out-of-service Southern California Edison transmission tower located in the area where the Eaton fire originated. Technical analysis and field evidence were combined to reconstruct the ignition sequence on the structure.

Investigators reported that video footage captured two distinct electrical arcing events in quick succession on the out-of-service tower. Following these arcs, burning material was seen falling from the tower into a receptive fuel bed below.

The reports state that the fuel bed ignited approximately 12 seconds after the burning material reached the ground. This sequence of arcing, falling debris, and subsequent ignition was cited as the mechanism that started the Eaton fire.

Southern California Edison has acknowledged receiving the investigative materials and said it is reviewing the reports. The utility stated that it has taken its potential role in the start of the fire seriously from the very beginning of the process.

A company spokesperson noted that the utility had previously indicated it was likely its equipment was associated with the ignition of the Eaton fire. With the release of the county’s reports, the utility is now formally evaluating the findings that link the fire to arcing on an out-of-service transmission tower.
