Record heat strains central and eastern U.S.

A broad and intense heat wave tightened its hold on the central and eastern United States by July 2, 2026, putting more than 160 million people under major or extreme heat risk. The conditions affected large portions of the Midwest, South, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, where dangerous combinations of high temperatures and humidity drove heat-index readings into the triple digits.

Forecasters warned that the oppressive heat would not be brief. The National Weather Service projected that dangerous, record-breaking conditions would persist across much of the central and eastern regions through Thursday and Friday, and continue along the East Coast into the holiday weekend.

The National Weather Service cautioned that heat-index values could approach or top 115°F from Washington, D.C., to New York over the Fourth of July period. The hottest conditions were centered along the Interstate 95 corridor, where large urban populations and extensive infrastructure concentrated the impacts.

As people sought relief in air conditioning and cooling systems, the demand for electricity strained local power grids. Utilities in several areas reported large customer outages as the heat persisted, prompting officials to urge residents to conserve energy where possible.

The heat wave delivered multiple daily temperature records on July 2 across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Central Park in New York City reached 100°F, its first triple-digit reading in years, while LaGuardia Airport recorded 104°F. In the same region, Newark and other locations also saw temperatures climb into the upper 90s and low 100s.

Further south along the corridor, Philadelphia hit 103°F and Boston reached 101°F, contributing to dozens of new daily records across the affected zone. In Ohio and other parts of the interior, heat-index readings also rose into the triple digits, underscoring the breadth of the event beyond coastal cities.

Local governments enacted targeted measures to reduce public exposure to the extreme heat. Philadelphia shortened a parade route and canceled some public events to limit the time people spent outdoors during the hottest hours. These adjustments were framed as precautionary steps in light of the record-breaking temperatures.

New York City opened cooling centers and deployed mobile medical vans to assist residents at higher risk of heat-related illness. Washington, D.C., activated an extreme heat alert and expanded public cooling resources, including additional locations where residents could seek air-conditioned shelter.

Across the affected regions, officials repeatedly urged people to take precautions, including staying hydrated, limiting strenuous outdoor activity, and checking on vulnerable individuals. These efforts were paired with continued monitoring of the heat wave’s evolution as it moved through the Independence Day holiday period.
