Samsung creates RX division to push robotics

Samsung Electronics has established a new RX (Robotics eXperience) division that will report directly to the company’s chief executive. The move is aimed at accelerating the development and commercialisation of robotics by elevating the business within Samsung’s organisational structure. By placing the RX division under the CEO, Samsung is positioning robotics as a core strategic area alongside its existing businesses.

The RX division is designed to consolidate functions that had previously been handled across separate teams. It will be responsible for mid-to-long-term robotics strategy, core technology development and business execution. Bringing these elements together under one unit is intended to align research, product development and market deployment across Samsung’s robotics initiatives.

Samsung has stated that the RX division will play a central role in expanding the company’s robotics research capabilities both in South Korea and overseas. The remit covers planning future product roadmaps, advancing core technologies and coordinating how robotics offerings are introduced into commercial settings. This integrated approach is meant to support a more coherent and scalable robotics portfolio over time.

As part of this push, Samsung plans to establish dedicated robotics research hubs in the United States, China and Japan. These hubs are intended to strengthen the company’s competitiveness by tapping into local ecosystems and expertise in each market. The overseas centres will complement domestic research efforts, creating a networked R&D footprint for robotics.

To support its robotics ambitions, Samsung has appointed Executive Vice President Lee, hired from Hyundai Motor Group, to head its Robotics Strategy Team. Reporting indicates that he previously led robotics strategy at Hyundai, including oversight and direction related to Boston Dynamics. His role at Samsung focuses on shaping long-term robotics strategy within the RX framework.

The appointment brings external experience from an automotive and advanced robotics context into Samsung’s organisation. By placing the Robotics Strategy Team under the RX division, Samsung is linking high-level strategic planning with the broader mandate for technology development and business execution across its robotics activities.

Reports differ on which top executive will lead the RX division at the CEO level. Some coverage identifies Samsung CEO Roh Tae-moon as heading the new robotics unit, while other reports name Jong-Hee Han. Despite this discrepancy in reporting on leadership, sources agree that the division reports directly to the company’s chief executive, reflecting its strategic importance.

The direct reporting line to the CEO underscores that robotics is being treated as a high-priority growth and innovation area within Samsung.
